Wireless network occasionally breaks, network utilities don't respond

Hi all,

I'm not certain this is caused by network issues, but it seems to manifest there more than anywhere else. At seemingly random times, my system will lose it's wireless network connection and any attempt to return any network utilities (such as iwconfig, ifconfig, wifi-menu, etc) will all simply freeze up and not respond. At the same time, keyboard and mouse input in xfce4 will stop responding, even though the system otherwise seems OK. I can Ctrl-Alt-F2 to a console and access my system fine, but a complete reboot is needed in order to use the network again.

I've googled this but I'm a bit lost as to where to even start. Can anyone please suggest some things that I might take a look at as probable causes?

My wireless adapter is a USB dongle:
Bus 006 Device 003: ID 0cf3:7015 Atheros Communications, Inc. TP-Link TL-WN821N v3 802.11n [Atheros AR7010+AR9287]

Thanks!
Mike

Does dmesg report something related? That might give you something to ixquick.
You could also have a go at disabling power saving for your dongle (if you have nothing better to try).
