Can't discover printers on network with CUPS [Closed]

Hey,

So I'm trying to connect to the printers at my research institute, and I'm not having much luck. From what they tell me, Ubuntu users using system-config-printer are usually able to detect the printers automatically, but I can't seem to reproduce it.

I've tried adding the host name (it doesn't have a port though) into /etc/cups/client.conf, starting 'systemctl start cups' and then starting system-config-printer but no luck.

I then tried running cups-browsed with 'systemctl start cups-browsed' to see if that would do anything else but system-config-printer is as useless as before. I've tried using the HTML interface but it's as unresponsive.

I'm usually good at pushing through this problems, but nothing is really giving me any feedback as to what the problem is. It's probably something quite stupid that I'm missing.

Any tips? Thanks!

Re: Can't discover printers on network with CUPS [Closed]

I happened to have the same situation in my university lab. I tried everything but cups never detected a thing.
Since I wanted to connect to a hp printer, I installed the entire hplip package through pacman. Then I ran hp-setup in order to scan for printers.

To my surprise, I saw a list of 200 printers connected throughout my university network. Finally I picked the ip address of the printer with the uri which will be usually like

hp:/net/HP_LaserJet_600_M602?ip=

I used this uri in CUPS to add the printer manually. I think this might be helpful to solve your issue.

Hey, thanks for the tip, but unfortunately it doesn't seem to work.

It is an HP printer that I want to connect to, but yah, no dice. Did you need cups or avahi or anything running? Was it a wired or wireless connection? (I'm on a wireless connection, but it's not supposed to matter...)

Have you considered that Kerberos-auth could be required?

Nope, but I'll look into it. I guess the admins are gone for the weekend. I'll ask them when they get back.

Alright, so eventually I just bugged the admins to help me come and set it up and they did it manually for the printer that I needed. Thanks for the advice, anyway!
