Heavy I/O on USB makes my desktop hang

Hello everyone,

this one is a little annoying. I am copying lots of data (3 TB) to a USB Hard disk (ntfs/fuse). Mostly big files (1-20 GB). I do this using krusader and its Queue management, so only one transfer is running at a time. As backend it uses (i think) kio, so progress is displayed as part of the kde notification thingy. I think that does not matter too much, so i think this is still the right section of the forums.

While copying, every once in a while (very random, on average i guess every 30 seconds) the desktop freezes for short periods of time, also very randomly varying between fractions of a second and a few seconds. This is not related to finishing a file (and maybe syncing) but also happens during transfer of very big files.

The source of the data is a nfs share which easily delivers 90 MB/sec, the transfer to the usb 2.0 disk is going at about 35 MB/sec. The CPU load is below 10%, also lots of (6 GB) free ram for buffers/cache.

I think this might have to do with some buffering/caching settings but i am not involved enough to tweak this appropriately. Anyone here who has a good hint at what to try?

Greetings

Re: Heavy I/O on USB makes my desktop hang

Hey Sunday87,

Similar issues and annoyances prompted me to switch to Linux-ck and the BFS (scheduler). Though, if I understand correctly, it sounds like Linux 3.13 may have some changes which improve the default kernel and scheduler.

Though, while doing some further reading on this I stumbled upon: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Ma … ge_devices. Seems to indicate your exact problem.

Best of luck,
