how can I supperess white noise coming from microphone

I have recently installed archlinux on my computer and after long searches I have not found a way to supperess  white noise coming from my microphone while talking on skype.
I have only alsa installed yet no matter how I play with the setting the white noise remain.

Is there some kind of program / driver I can install that can supperess or lower  that white noise ?
It seems odd to me that such option will not exist (in windwos you can do it in the realtek audio manager).

help will very appreciated.

reduce the sensitivity in alsamixer. if you search the forums, there is already an old thread on this.

If you have a slider for 'mic boost' in alsamixer, turn it all the way down.

I can't seem to find that thread.

I have played around with alsamixer and made sure I don't have mic boost on but if I set the capture and digital to 0 dB I still get some very weak white and I get weak mic volume.
If I increase it I get some white noise but very good mic volume.
Is there no way to have both a strong mic volume and low white noise ?
