Installed WinXP, lost GRUB [Solved]

Okay, I recently installed windows XP after install Arch and Grub on my laptop, and lost Grub on the MBR, since Windows XP has the worst custom install EVER.

Anyway, I've got an Arch 0.7 base install CD, and was wondering what the correct procedure AND correct, exact commands to reinstall grub on my system was. I know I have to mount sys and proc and stuff like that to get udev even running, but after a lot of trials and errors I kind of wanted to know how to do it. Pretty please?

My / is on hda6, while my /boot is on /hda2.

Thanks.

If you could get your system to boot by hand you could probably fix the problem by just reinstalling grub with pacman. Otherwise, you'll need to reinstall grub using the grub console and it's set of strange commands.

Note that any boot cd that used grub is great for fixing these problems, as you can edit the boot line and boot into your system instead of the cd.

No, I need to chroot into my system and mount sys and proc and all that, as far as I've been told, in order for grub-install to work at all... I don't know how to fix this, so I'm not sure at all. Oh, and I don't have any empty cd-r's, so I cant burn Knoppix or similar, heh.

Try these instructions.

Note that newer (0.7.1-pre1 and up) install CDs don't have devfs, so instead of the devFS line, use this:

# mount -o bind /dev /mnt/dev

Oh yea, and if you're not mounting devfs, you don't have to bother with the devfsd line either.  smile

and this will work even though I don't use devfs on my install? I mean, I run udev (haven't gotten udev to work with this, though)

Ok, to get it working I had to symlink from /dev/discs to /dev/hdaX and then run install-grub /dev/hda /dev/hda1. Hope this might come in handy for someone in the future! Thanks!
