Hi all!
i've just bought the toshiba chromebook and i've just installed arch on it (it's easy since it has an x86 cpu and seabios). I red
https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Ac … Chromebook to help me.
by the way, i've 3 important problems (or 2?):
1- i'm still not able to get my touchpad work (neither using the kernel patches described in the link above[assuming they are the correct ones for me])
2- i get tons of "resume error" if i try to poweroff the notebook after a recover from suspend mode.
(basically, i put the chromebook in suspend mode for a while, next i recover it and i can do my work, finally, if i try to poweroff, it gives me that error)
3- (i don't know if it's a problem) during the boot i get this error
usb 2-4: string descriptor 0 malformed (err = -61), defaulting to 0x0409
Hoping for aid!! XD
PS: i'm italian, sorry for grammatical or sintax mistakes!

Okay, that was an utter failure...
I took a look at the patches. They were published in october last year. Some more fixes might have came in.
You might not like this, but I suggest you try a git kernel -> v3.14-rc2. Personally, I use the vanilla kernel and a custom script for initcpio. But there seems to be an aur git package.
Could you also please specify the exact make/model/id of your chromebook?

ok, i'm downloading...
btw, my chromebook is a
Toshiba chromebook CB35-A3120
did you mean this?
UPDATE
i found this https://aur.archlinux.org/packages/linux-mainline that is linux-kernel in rc2 instead of the git version (still in rc1)....
i can't understand if the mainline version have arch patches in or not, btw, i'm trying the mainline version.

ArchLinux only applies patches if it's really necessary. If you want a 'franken' kernel, use Ubuntu. In Arch vanilla (upstream) = arch (stock). That mainline kernel has these modifications:
0001-syscalls.h-use-gcc-alias-instead-of-assembler-aliase.patch # fix symbols (probably for external modules like nvidia)
change-default-console-loglevel.patch # make the kernel more silent by default
criu-no-expert.patch # enables something without the use of the EXPERT switch
So, nothing big. You mostly want an ArchLinux kernel for the automatic updates. You can even use mkinitcpio on a a stripped monolithic upstream custom kernel (like me).

The last commit moved the platform specific driver from drivers/platform/x86 to drivers/platform. The above are comitted after v3.13 and before v3.14-rc. It doesn't look promising, but it's worth a try. Furthermore, the Kconfig says this:
config CHROMEOS_LAPTOP
tristate "Chrome OS Laptop"
depends on I2C
depends on DMI
---help---
This driver instantiates i2c and smbus devices such as
light sensors and touchpads. If you have a supported Chromebook, choose Y or M here.
The module will be called chromeos_laptop.
It mentions touchpads, so that could be it. It should be enabled by default (don't worry), but now we know where to look.
I Googled your model number, it's only listed at retail and review sites. It's pretty new I guess. At worst, you have to mail the linux kernel mailing list to add support for your model. I guess Toshiba didn't do that (yet). It could be that the driver has not been taught to recognize your shiny new model.
Ow btw, I also found references to claim Google Drive space before using Linux on these machines. I hope you did that.

sorry, i-'m in late...
btw, nor the mainline neither the git packets can be installed, i'm now starting to build the kernel from source, but it will take some time...

Okay, that is not a problem. Make sure you have CHROMEOS_LAPTOP enabled. Does not matter if it's a module or build in.

lil' update:
i spent the whole mornig trying to run the mainline (or the git) kernel...in the meanwhile rc3 was out...
Ok, no probs, i'm NOW compiling the new linux-3-14rc3 with google chrome driver.
Start at 18:16
2 cores haswell intel celeron 1.4Ghz using the "-2" option with make.
let's see how long it takes!
PS: I made really few kernels by me...but despite this I could not resist and i make some (pretty random XP) mods to che .config....
Hoping it will not be a kernel panic!
EDIT:
What? I've just done!
Uhm....let's reboot!

I hope you used '-j2' instead of '-2'. Make sure to install the modules. And yes, you could strip your kernel of all the stuff you don't need. My bzImage is 4,3 MB and that includes *everything* I need to power this laptop and it's periphals.
A stock kernel contains a 3,5 MB bzImage and maybe 50MB of modules?
If you start stripping, please tell so I can post you a list of definitly required options. Otherwise you might start to grow grey hair.

I am also thinking to buy Toshiba Chromebook CB35-A3120 to install Arch Linux on it.
Are you still using Arch on it? How is that?
Can you solve your problem:
by the way, i've 3 important problems (or 2?):
1- i'm still not able to get my touchpad work (neither using the kernel patches described in the link above[assuming they are the correct ones for me])
2- i get tons of "resume error" if i try to poweroff the notebook after a recover from suspend mode.
(basically, i put the chromebook in suspend mode for a while, next i recover it and i can do my work, finally, if i try to poweroff, it gives me that error)3- (i don't know if it's a problem) during the boot i get this error
usb 2-4: string descriptor 0 malformed (err = -61), defaulting to 0x0409
Hoping for aid!! XD
In my case, as I am not very expert, I prefer to use kernel which comes with Arch installation.
And with any patches I can do.
Amazing !

I ran a custom-patched version of Arch on the Toshiba without any problems. You can probably use a kernel designed for another one of the Celeron 2955U Chromebooks, but I haven't tried any of them. I think this is one:

I upgraded to latest kernel 3.17 rc4 and touchpad working well.
But this message "usb 2-4: string descriptor 0 malformed (err = -61), defaulting to 0x0409" still there during the boot...
for toshiba cb35...

You can find out which device is 2-4 with the command "lsusb". What does it say?
