just looking at your rc.conf...
maybe try enable hotplug instead of the hwd / lshwd stuff
hwd will tell you what hardware is present and how to setup it, but does not do it automatically.
check here
also, a nice sound troubleshoot guide here here

Sorry to put a damper on it, but you can't use hotplug with the current version of udev. At any rate, you have the correct modules loaded.
Does alsamixer actually work, or do you get a message saying that there's no sound card?

gullible: yeh i just tried an update myself. :-
:: udev conflicts with hotplug. Remove hotplug? [Y/n] n
then found your post as i came back to report this.
In light of that pointer at the wiki, maybe lshwd will help.
however, my sound works ok, and im semi reluctant to ruin it now by "upgrading" lol.
thx for the info tho.
/me takes a bravery pill

Don't use lshwd, use hwdetect. lshwd doesn't see all your modules; hwdetect usually loads just about everything you need.
rayjgu3: if alsamixer works, try muting IEC958 Capture Monitor and unmuting IEC958 and IEC958 Playback (I think that's what it was called anyway, perhaps it was IEC968 Output). Also, make sure that your PCM is not muted. If the above measures fail, then try muting all the channels that have to do with input.

done just as you said Gullible through alsamixer no lshwd
no good even after reboot
ps alsamixer gives me this
Card: VIA 8237
Chip: Analog Devices AD1888
View: [Playback] Capture All

What do you mean, "no lshwd"? :?

i unloaded it as your suggestion

Ahh, okay.
Alright, I'm going to take a long shot here: try muting ALL channels EXCEPT for PCM, which should be at 100. If that doesn't work, try unmuting Master and raising it to 100 too.
Offline
yeah i just tried that no go
tried several diffrent options on that cant get a squeek on anything
im about to pull my hair out say screw it wipe it clean & reinstall see if that helps im backing my stuff up right now with my new dvd burner give it a workout ill post back if i get sound which i doubt will be tonight
thanks

Alright, one more try...
*bangs head*
Try unmuting ALL channels, and raising ALL of them to maximum volume.
