X fails to display, but runs without errors with Dual-Link DVI adapter

I am trying to use a Thunderbolt to Dual-Link DVI adapter to connect to a Dell U2711 on my 10,x Macbook Pro, using Nouveau drivers. When I boot into Arch with the adapter plugged in and run `startx`, X loads its extensions, then seems to hang.

The strange thing is that (as far as I can tell) according to /var/log/Xorg.0.log, things are working fine:

The only two lines that give me pause are:

[    27.628] resize called 1600 1200

But I'm not sure if those could be the issue.

A selection from ps -A (from tty2) shows the same picture--my WM is running, X seems to have started just fine.

  433 tty1     00:00:00 zsh
  459 tty1     00:00:00 startx

So, at this point, I'm at a loss. Where else can I look to find a clue about what's going wrong?

Lastly, I looked at dmesg, but didn't see anything obvious (to me).

Re: X fails to display, but runs without errors with Dual-Link DVI adapter

Someone else on the forums used a different adapter. It also seems that apple + Thunderbolt is a mess.

Re: X fails to display, but runs without errors with Dual-Link DVI adapter

Unfortunately, that other user was also me, heh. I realize now that my post made it sound like the issue was solved, but it isn't exactly. I can use a passive single-link DVI adapter at work, as the resolution on that monitor is lower, but at home, I have a 2560x1440 monitor that requires dual-link DVI for full resolution.

Also, from the article you linked:

Note, all of this is for Thunderbolt the PCI interconnect, not the video connection. That works just fine on Linux as it isn't PCI Express, but just a video pass-through. No problems there.

So that's consistent with what I've heard.

Plus this suggests that this exact setup *can* work on Linux. At this point, I'm considering doing a quick Ubuntu install just to see if it works out of the box and if so check to see whether they have something I'm missing.

Thanks for your help!

Re: X fails to display, but runs without errors with Dual-Link DVI adapter

Ah, ok. I was in the assumption the PCI connect had something to do with the video connection. But it seems like Apple wanted to reinvented PCIe...

I'm out of my territory here so feel free to ignore the following.

These are the things I notice in your Xorg.0.log:

[    19.474] (==) modesetting(G0): Depth 24, (==) framebuffer bpp 32
[    19.474] (==) modesetting(G0): RGB weight 888
[    19.474] (==) modesetting(G0): Default visual is TrueColor
[    19.474] (II) modesetting(G0): ShadowFB: preferred YES, enabled YES
[    19.500] (II) modesetting(G0): Output VGA-1-0 has no monitor section
[    19.526] (II) modesetting(G0): EDID for output VGA-1-0
[    19.526] (II) modesetting(G0): Using default gamma of (1.0, 1.0, 1.0) unless otherwise stated.
[    19.526] (==) modesetting(G0): DPI set to (96, 96)

What the hell is modesetting doing there?

And have you tried the nvidia blob? It could be that this is not well supported by nouveau. Maybe check up with their IRC / mailing list.
