Trusted User Repositories

And now, for the moment you've all been waiting for! Trusted User Repositories (TURs)!

Some Trusted Users (TUs) have been asked to run their own repositories at one central location that anyone can access. This will definitely clean up incoming (because we'll be taking those user's packages out!).

Each of these TUs has said they were interested in having their packages in their own repository and keeping them up to date. That way you don't have to worry about packages being out of date, like they could be when you pull them out of incoming.

I'm going to state the warning right now. While these are trusted users, what they do with their packages is their own business. If one of the TU's packages breaks your system, leaves your doors unlocked, or runs away with your girlfriend (or boyfriend) it's not any of the Archlinux maintainers' faults. Talk to the TU wink

Another use for these repos is to let other, not so trusted (yes, this means you tongue), users submit their packages to a TU to have it looked over and possibly included in the user's repo. Incoming will still exist, but it makes it easier on the maintainers this way.

The address for TUR is http://tur.berlios.de. Weren't the people at Berlios nice? Give them a round of applause, without them this would be much more difficult.

Good Idea....Probably does deserve a front page announcement.

Geez, you guys really are demanding...

"Give us some place to put packages!", "Make sure the packages are up to date!", "Fix the packages!", "Post this on the front page!"... It's like I owe you something!

Really makes it sound appealing to be me, eh? tongue

Re: Trusted User Repositories

I like to think that the TURs are the official archlinux unofficial user repos. By this I mean that it becomes a central location for TUs to put up there packages, instead of having to host them just anywhere. It does add a legitimacy, as opposed to just downloading packages off of some guy's site.

But I also won't take crap for things the TUs do wink. Although I suppose I have to take crap for what the software does... awwww...

Re: Trusted User Repositories

ok, my TUR is filling with packages; slowly, becasue i only have 128kbps upstream, but working

rasmol and sitecopy already in, but with my third package i had a small problem, so here the

first bug for TURs
----------------------
1) i was uploading maxima, the pkg-file is about 5MB big
2) after uploading, i got this:

Problems uploading files
Debugging information:
Array
(
    [pkgbuildfile] => Array
        (
            [name] => PKGBUILD
            [type] => text/plain
            [tmp_name] => /tmp/phpp2aO3u
            [error] => 0
            [size] => 452
        )

    [packagefile] => Array
        (
            [name] => maxima-5.9.0-1.pkg.tar.gz
            [type] =>
            [tmp_name] =>
            [error] => 2
            [size] => 0
        )

)

... and the package is not in my TUR

as it sayed "[size] => 0" for the pkg-file, i think there is some error becasue of the size of the file

... and what i have to say: great job making TURs in so short time to work (elementary) - big compliments

I was joking about the "its your job" comment. I really do appreciate all the work you do for free. I only wish I could handle the "hassles" of people like you do.

Good Job Apeiro, Xentac, Sarah, and every other person who spends their time doing this project.

Re: Trusted User Repositories

dp, you might as well just email me with problems like that... though I was under the impression that berlios' php.ini was set up to have a maximum of 20meg... I guess I'll have to look up that error number (usually when it was over the upload max it would return error 1).

nifan, PKGBUILDs are the only things being uploaded right now. If a package needs patch files and things like that then the TUs don't upload those currently. To see the PKGBUILDs though you can go to http://tur.berlios.de/pkgbuild. Once I implement things like patch files then I'll make a web interface where you can actually see those files.

Re: Trusted User Repositories

Currently, I have to think that the quality (and quantity) of the packages you contribute are good. Then I'll contact you.

Maybe we'll figure something out where the other TUs vote, or you have to be sponsored or something...

Re: Trusted User Repositories

This is great..... well done.
I pasted contrasutra's repo in /etc/pacman.conf and upgraded Opera. It went smoothly.

For my information as the author of hwd, when I upgrade it to 1.6.1 (currently hwd-1.5.2), how do I proceed... upload in incoming or inform contrasutra (its in his repo)?

Re: Trusted User Repositories

Well, I think uploading it to incoming, and then making a forum post or sending me an email would be best.

That way others can still use your package until I update it in my repo.

Re: Trusted User Repositories

One of the goals of the TURs is to get stuff out of incoming. I think posting here and contacting contrasutra would be best.

Re: Trusted User Repositories

Just so that everyone knows. I've figured out how I'm going to handle patch files and stuff. I just have to implement it. I'm not going to get time (or inclination) to do it till next weekend. So there's something you can hope for next weekend.

Have you figured out a way to get the user email address in the TUR page yet?

Because if you want people to contact the TU's, then make it easy. wink

Re: Trusted User Repositories

From the sounds of it people don't want to contact the TUs. Instead they just want to complain about them.

One thing I want to mention now to the TUs. If you're going to add someone else's package to your repo, contact them and tell them first. People get pissed off when you take their stuff.

Re: Trusted User Repositories

It should be mentioned though, that from now on if you upload a package to /incoming, expect it to be added to the offial repos and the TU repos.

I mean, its stupid to say: "I uploaded this package so you could use it, and now you are. Im outraged!"
