BSNL 3G Datacard issues

I have been trying to get my BSNL 3G datacard to work with arch linux to no avail. First, I tried to install it using the installation files given on the datacard USB(it mounts perfectly no problem there). When I extract the files and run install.sh I get this output:

..................start install.................
*** Check for root.../usr/lib/libqt-mt.so.3.3.8 /usr/lib/libqt-mt.so /usr/lib/libqt-mt.so.3.3 /usr/lib/libqt-mt.so.3

check wvdial successfully.
ok...

./Connect_Manager: error while loading shared libraries: libusb-0.1.so.4: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory

There is an application installed called BSNL Dataone in my applications list but the program does not load at all.
I tried using wvdial but it gives me the same error all the time:

--> WvDial: Internet dialer version 1.61
--> Initializing modem.
--> Sending: ATZ
ATZ
OK
--> Sending: ATQ0 V1 E1 S0=0 &C1 &D2 +FCLASS=0
ATQ0 V1 E1 S0=0 &C1 &D2 +FCLASS=0
OK
--> Sending: ATQ0 V1 E1 S0=0 &C1 &D2 +FCLASS=0
ATQ0 V1 E1 S0=0 &C1 &D2 +FCLASS=0
OK
--> Modem initialized.
--> Configuration does not specify a valid login name.
--> Configuration does not specify a valid password.

The card does not have any username/password. The only info it asked in Windows was the number to dial to. I have edited wvdial.conf to include that number. This is my wvdial.conf :

[Dialer Defaults]
Init1 = ATZ
Init2 = ATQ0 V1 E1 S0=0 &C1 &D2 +FCLASS=0
Init3 = ATQ0 V1 E1 S0=0 &C1 &D2 +FCLASS=0
Phone = 9445143977
Modem Type = Analog Modem
Stupid Mode = 1
Baud = 9600
Dial Command = ATDT
Modem = /dev/ttyUSB1
ISDN = 0
Auto Reconnect = off
Password =
Username =

I tried this with Ubuntu and the modem usually appeared in the network manager applet. However, it is not doing so anymore. I'm using gnome 3.12. modprobe alx which worked with ubuntu doesn't seem to work here.
I need to get this working quick as I will be travelling on Saturday and need to get it working for the trip.

Re: BSNL 3G Datacard issues

i wouldn't try to use the dial app. supplied by BSNL; i've never seen any of them (not only BSNL) work on any distro w/o having to make serious modifications to lib's and versions used.

your wvdial log shows that the modem is being recognized and your machine can communicate with it -- that's the biggest problem already solved. in the past, i had to use sakis3g to make 3G modems talk to my machine, but recent updates to usb libraries seem to have solved many of these problems.

i'm not using BSNL's dataone, but vodafone, also in india, and i have to use the phone no. of the SIM i use for 3G connection, both as login name & password. i wouldn't be surprised if the same applied to you.

also, setting your baud rate at 9600 is way too low. you should use the largest rate available, don't recall which that was -- i'm not using wvdial at the moment, but netctl, which doesn't specify a baud rate in it's conf. files.

here's the arch wiki page with a lot of explanations about this: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/USB_3G_Modem

as i said, i haven't used wvdial in a long time but have been using netctl successfully for a while. here's the conf. file i'm using at the moment, for a vodafone 3G connection (in case you want to try that, too):

Description='vodafone USB stick connection'
Interface=/dev/ttyUSB3
Connection=mobile_ppp
DefaultRoute=true
UsePeerDNS=false
User='7872431799'
Password='7872431799'
AccessPointName=www
# Mode can be one of 3Gpref, 3Gonly, GPRSpref, GPRSonly, None
Mode=3Gpref
DNS=('8.8.8.8' '8.8.4.4')

this would have to be adjusted for your phone no. of course, and perhaps the AccessPointName is different with BSNL. you can find a lot of info via google; some of it is useful, a lot not.

Re: BSNL 3G Datacard issues

Thanks, I did what you said(put my phone number as username and password) and now this is the output I am getting when I run wvdial.

--> WvDial: Internet dialer version 1.61
--> Initializing modem.
--> Sending: ATZ
ATZ
OK
--> Sending: ATQ0 V1 E1 S0=0 &C1 &D2 +FCLASS=0
ATQ0 V1 E1 S0=0 &C1 &D2 +FCLASS=0
OK
--> Sending: ATQ0 V1 E1 S0=0 &C1 &D2 +FCLASS=0
ATQ0 V1 E1 S0=0 &C1 &D2 +FCLASS=0
OK
--> Modem initialized.
--> Sending: ATDT*99#
--> Waiting for carrier.
ATDT*99#
CONNECT 7200000
--> Carrier detected. Starting PPP immediately.
--> Starting pppd at Tue May 20 18:07:22 2014
--> Pid of pppd: 2492
--> Using interface ppp0
--> pppd: L[7f]
--> pppd: L[7f]
--> pppd: L[7f]
--> pppd: L[7f]
--> pppd: L[7f]
--> pppd: L[7f]
--> Disconnecting at Tue May 20 18:07:22 2014
--> The PPP daemon has died: A modem hung up the phone (exit code = 16)
--> man pppd explains pppd error codes in more detail.
--> Try again and look into /var/log/messages and the wvdial and pppd man pages for more information.

The error code says that the modem hung up on the phone.

Re: BSNL 3G Datacard issues

i'm not sure what these errors mean, exactly. i've seen similar ones when using wvdialer earlier and eventually got them sorted out, using man pages, arch wiki pages, and google. it's probably got something to do with dialing prefixes for your modem, en- or dis-abling one or the other feature like header compression and what not. this also needs to be communicated to wvdialer / pppd by specifiying the proper options.

it's much easier with netctl's mobile_ppp connection type, at least for me & my modem. i suspect that BSNL uses the same or a similar setup as vodafone, so it might work for your as well.

here's all about netctl on archlinux: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/netctl

there's also systemd networking in the works, but i believe that's not as mature as netctl at the moment and doubt it will support mobile 3G connections out of the box.

Re: BSNL 3G Datacard issues

I don't understand how you use netctl to configure mobile connections. Could you explain in detail?

Re: BSNL 3G Datacard issues

with netctl you can use any of the connection types that are available under /usr/lib/network/connections; one of them is "mobile_ppp".

i got it working with the options i quoted earlier and, if i remember correctly, didn't have to change any of the default configurations under /etc/ppp/.

to do this you have to install netctl, make sure you're not using any of the other connection methods like network-manager, at the same time, and create the file i quoted earlier (adjusted for your machine and provider's settings) under /etc/netctl. (you find examples that are meant to be copied to /etc/netctl and edited under /etc/netctl/examples.)

particularly you have to take care to use the correct modem device, which most likely is different on your machine, and the values provided by BSNL for access point, etc. if you're not sure about these, a google search should help.

Re: BSNL 3G Datacard issues

Ok I dunno if I want to try an entirely new method to fix all this. Also, I'm getting a new error message when I use wvdial :

--> WvDial: Internet dialer version 1.61
--> Initializing modem.
--> Sending: ATZ
ATZ

--> Sending: ATQ0 V1 E1 +FCLASS=0

Also, I thought maybe the modem wasn't set to modem mode by default and tried to use usb modeswitch but I keep getting this error :

[venkat@hal9000 ~]$ sudo usb_modeswitch -v 19d2 -p 2003 -u 2

Maybe this is the problem? I tried many forum guides but they do not seem to work. Also network manager isn't recognizing my 3G modem. I remember it did in Ubuntu.

Re: BSNL 3G Datacard issues

up to you what you want to try. i did figure it out for wvdial as well, but it was more difficult than using netctl; that's about all i remember. i don't remember what changes i had to make to various conf. files to actually get it working in the end.

your modem was recognized as a modem, without fiddling around with usb_data; otherwise it couldn't have generated those modem-specific error messages. no storage device (which it would be to your computer if it wasn't a modem) says anything about init string, per example. good luck...

Re: BSNL 3G Datacard issues

Hey guys, I really need to get this modem working. Why doesn't network manager recognize my modem?? Ubuntu recognized it perfectly!

Please, any help would be appreciated.

Re: BSNL 3G Datacard issues

i assume you have modemmamager installed in addition to networkmanager? that's required of course. and again, if i remember correctly, i had to add a 3G connection maually before NM would recognize my USB modem. even then it takes a while before the available 3G modem pops up.

Re: BSNL 3G Datacard issues

I'm using gnome 3.12, and after selecting new mobile broadband there's a scroll down list section where I can select the device to use. BUT it doesn't display any devices. Also,  wvdial is still throwing up modem hung up error.
