Hello all,
while updating my system, I accidentally renamed passwd. I can see the following files:
passwd-
passwd.old (the one I renamed)
passwd.pacnew
However, I can't move anything back to passwd. I read that you can restore this file, but am not sure how to restore it. I'm afraid to reboot as I won't be able to get into my system.
I've searched the forum on how to restore, but can't find a mention of how to restore, only to restore.
Any help is greatly appreciated.

EDIT: changed can to can't, just a plain typo.

These don't make sense !
Did you mean you can't move back to passwd instead of can ? If so, what error does it give you if you try?
There's no such thing as a stupid question, but there sure are a lot of inquisitive idiots !

Yes, can't move back, sorry, a typo and fixed in post.
Here is what I get when I try to rename the file back
sudo mv passwd.old passwd
sudo: unkown uid 1000: who are you?

Boot some kind of a livecd, mount your root partition and then rename the file using the livecd's root user ? Dunno if it works but it's a start.

@DrShame,
Thanx, I'm going to do later today (after lunch). But first, I'm going to give this post a little while to see if there is any other way.

DrShame's solution is probably the easiest and most straightforward. I would go with that.

You can always boot from Arch live CD and chroot into your system and than rename that file.
