Welp I thought I fixed this, but I guess not. I'll disable tear free and see if that fixes anything.

I don't know if it's the same but I've had plasma freezing the past few weeks, but we just got an upgrade so let's see with it.

I've experienced these freezes too but they were so rare (maybe twice in the last week) and I think they were associated with heavy load (CPU intensive stuff) that I didn't pay much attention to them. I had one occur just now but I managed to salvage my session by dropping to TTY2, killing plasma and kwin_x11 and restarting them.

Sometimes 've been able to do the same, but other times a hard reboot was the only solution. Anyway, also for me the issue is very rare.

All you guys with plasma freezes, are you using an nvidia with prop drivers? You might need to set KWIN_EXPLICIT_SYNC=0 in your /etc/profile or similar (if you are already using the __GL_YIELD=USLEEP env variable that became necessary for a few setups in KDE4 times). See https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=351844#c2 as well

Well disabling tear free (which I was told, that might fix the problem) didn't fix it. I experienced two complete freezes just today.
And I never could do it through tty2 or whatever, because keyboard is the first thing to "go" when it freezes. So my mouse might still be working, but the keyboard doesn't.
I'm again in the total dark about what might cause the freezes. One thing that most of them had in common was net traffic and mounted external hard drive. But I really think it has to be something about the internet connection.
But I'm not sure what I should monitor to prove this hypothesis. I installed nettop, I'll see if that helps me indentify the problem.

@V1del I have a radeon card with open driver. Other people see the same issues with catalyst.

Thanks for the info. Yes, I am using nvidia with prop drivers. I'll set the variable as you mentioned.

Same here, but I've always been able to kill plasma and restart it, so it's a non-blocker for me.

since the upgrade to 5.4.2, i have two issues:
Breeze dark icons are broken: Most are blank, especially in dolphin
Screen flickering. Can be temporarily fixed via kwin_x11 --replace, but returns quickly (i have intel graphics)

I'm pretty sure this also solves my problems, even though I have ATI/AMD graphics.
After I "hotfixed" this yesterday I experienced no freezes. But today, before I did
export_KWIN_EXPLICIT_SYNC=0
export__GL_YIELD=USLEEP
I experienced a freeze right away.
Hopefully adding those two lines to profile will solve the problem.

Yeah it might be an explicit Kwin bug, so disabling KWIN_EXPLICIT_SYNC might help with different cards. __GL_YIELD is definitely Nvidia though so it won't do anything on your setup

Sadly it didn't work. Or maybe I did something wrong, I don't know.
EDIT: maybe the problem is, that adding it to /etc/profile doesn't do anything? Because now I "hotfixed" it again (even with /etc/profile edited) and now I have no errors.

Depends on your shell, /etc/profile should be sourced by basically everything on login though afaik, check with printenv if it has been added, and of course make sure that it is written correctly

Do you think on next weeks a plasma update fix this freezing problems?, ive got this issue last 2 weeks, don't wanna change to another desktop.

Highly unlikely. Freezes happen in mesa/xorg/drivers, and that's where they need to be fixed.

Hello,
I'm using KDE with Plasma 5.4.2. I'm trying to make the program mail-notification appearing on systray, but haven't succeeded yet.
I tried by installing libappindicator packages (gtk2, gtk3, sharp), sni-qt, and xembed-sni-proxy-git.
I already saw a topic about this subject but there was apparently no solution found to this problem.
I don't know what systray framework this program is using and if there is a possibility to make it work on the plasma 5 systray framework. Anyone could help?
Sincerely,
Case_Of.

I had to wait one minute to see Plasma unfrozen, did you wait this such time? And did you try to enable triple buffering (as explained in the bug report)?

Downgrading linux (I have to use LTS anyway because of AMD driver) and mesa fixed it for me.
I don't think that adding KWIN_EXPLICIT_SYNC to /etc/profile did anything.
Hopefully this will help others.
Also, on completely other note: Is it just me, or did Dolphin lost the support for mplayerthumbs and PDF preview? They don't show up in my dolphin options...

The Dolphin KF5 will need the KF5 thumbnailer plugins.
PDF: https://aur.archlinux.org/packages/kdeg … works-git/
By my knowledge the mplayerthumbs is not ported to the KF5. The ffmpegthumbs is available: https://www.archlinux.org/packages/extr … pegthumbs/
Other options:
- ffmpegthumb: https://github.com/Yukariin/ffmpegthumb
- ffmpegthumbs-mattepaint: http://kde-apps.org/content/show.php/FF … ent=153902

@primoz
How are you adding them to your /etc/profile? you have to add them in the same format, it's ultimately just a text file interpreted by your shell, as in
/etc/profile
-------------------
....
export __GL_YIELD=USLEEP
export KWIN_EXPLICIT_SYNC=0

@Rog131: Thanks! Finally got PDF and video previews back.
@V1del: Yeah I was just thinking about that, but I solved my problems with freezing without that. (I'll keep in mind though).
