Canon LiDe 110 scanner: "Invalid Argument" error + other weird things

In my previous Linux installation (Gentoo), this scanner worked fine with Sane. But now I'm having problems. They are basically the same as described here. Fortunately for shadeless, the problem solved itself somehow, but I'm afraid that doesn't help me. ;-)

Quick summary:

Actually, before the error message appears, it almost seems to work. The scanner-head is moved to the starting position, and proper scanning noises are produced. But soon after, the "Invalid argument" error appears, and the scanner-head is moved all the way to the opposite side *and further*, pushing against the boundary of the scanning area. This makes a horrible sound and is probably bad for the hardware. At that point in the experiment, I typically unplug.

I've followed the Sane guide, and consulted the relevant troubleshooting section to no avail. As far as I'm aware, no special firmware is required of this scanner, there's only one backend for it (genesys) and I'm plugging it into a USB 2.0 port.

I'd appreciate some help! Please let me know if you need more output.
