[SOLVED] can't see .local domain

Edit: after comparing installed packages I found that nss-mdns was not installed on the failing machine.

I'm setting up a new Arch system on a Zotac box. Most things are working OK and I have upgraded and used the network. I'm using network manager to control the network. However, even though I appear to have avahi-daemon running and have nsswitch configured like this

......
hosts: files mdns4_minimal [NOTFOUND=return] dns myhostname wins
.....

I cannot seem to connect to other machines on the .local domain. I have .local in my extra search domains and /etc/resolv.conf loks like

# Generated by NetworkManager
search .local
nameserver 192.168.0.1

I checked  /etc/avahi/avahi-daemon.conf and that shows no changes from the default ie #domain-name=local. Ive tried variously removing the . in the network manager config without success.

I have a similarly configured machine nearby that works.

I tried using dig etc to see what's going on, but that doesn't seem to give any useful information on either machine.

What am I missing?
