CUPS 2.0 issues: "printer is not responding"

I am in the middle of a very painful transition to CUPS 2.0.

I have a small local network with a Linux print server and both Linux and Mac clients. Printing worked fine with CUPS 1.7.5

After setting up the server, I can print locally to the USB-connected printer (from cli using lpr, server has no GUI installed).

I can also print to the server from the Macs: the printer is discovered automatically and printing works fine.

However, I cannot print from the Linux workstation. I followed instruction in the wiki (both the CUPS page and the CUPS_printer_sharing page), but nothing works:

0) I installed CUPS on the Linux client (I tried to limit myself to libcups, but it didn't work. Apps complained that a binary for lpr was missing)

Then I tried setting it up to talk to the Linux server.

1) First, I tried creating a printer on the client, connected to the automatically discovered printer on the server (as the wiki page recommends).
The result is that the printing jobs never make it to the server: the Cups client tries connecting to the printer for a few minutes, then it gives up with a "Printer not responding" error

2) I also tried printing directly to the shared printer (as on the Macs), since it shows up correctly in the printing dialogs from both Kde and Gnome apps (without using the printer created in CUPS on the client). This way, the print job does make it to the server, but then it gets stuck there forever in a "Processing..." state (which makes me think there has been corruption in transfer or, perhaps, some format incompatibility).

3. Finally I tried printing from the client's command line, but I failed because I cannot figure out the correct name of the printer. lpinfo -v produces a mangled name:

network dnssd://HP_LaserJet_Leo%20%40%20polus._ipp._tcp.local/cups?uuid=57a5b488-3c17-37bd-5ae8-cc00a2c40789

and all the permutations I tried failed.

Help greatly appreciated.

Re: CUPS 2.0 issues: "printer is not responding"

Correction to the above:

From a gnome's apps (evince) I can print directly to the server's printer (case 2 above). But not if I try the locally created printer
