[SOLVED] new install Xorg not starting

I am running a vm install of arch and I cannot get startx to work. I went through the wiki section "Xorg as a systemd user service" and tried what it suggested and still it would not work. Below is my log file. Anyone have any suggestions? Thanks!

Re: [SOLVED] new install Xorg not starting

First step to setting up a GUI is installing video drivers.
https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Ge … _interface
Which Drivers did you load?
pacman -S xf86-video-vesa? perhaps?

Re: [SOLVED] new install Xorg not starting

Read the last line of the log: there is nothing for X to start.

Also, why have you installed every possible driver?

Re: [SOLVED] new install Xorg not starting

I saw a tutorial that suggested running paceman -S xorg, that installed every driver. what am I missing?

I love how you guys always provide little hints without giving the whole answer. Great way to teach. Annoying as hell, but great way to teach.

What he's saying is that:
[  2866.219] (EE) Server terminated successfully (0)

Meaning your xorg is working, but you haven't installed a window manager or desktop environment for it to run.

https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Ge … _interface

And also unless you plan on running this on a crazy amount of different video cards for some reason... You can probably uninstall the drivers you don't need.

Re: [SOLVED] new install Xorg not starting

I got the impression that would at least get an xterm session. Here is the last part of my .xinitrc

twm &
xclock -geometry 50x50-1+1 &
xterm -geometry 80x50+494+51 &
xterm -geometry 80x20+494-0 &
exec xterm -geometry 80x66+0+0 -name login

Please read the wiki entry on xinitrc: yours is wrong on every count...

Re: [SOLVED] new install Xorg not starting

ok I copy the .xinitrc from the /skel directory

[herminio@archlinux-vm ~]$ cat .xinitrc
#!/bin/sh
#
# ~/.xinitrc
#
# Executed by startx (run your window manager from here)

if [ -d /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc.d ]; then
  for f in /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc.d/*; do
    [ -x "$f" ] && . "$f"
  done
  unset f
fi

exec startx
# exec gnome-session
# exec startkde
# exec startxfce4
# ...or the Window Manager of your choice
exec xterm
[herminio@archlinux-vm ~]$

still failed and here is the log

Re: [SOLVED] new install Xorg not starting

You didn't read the wiki page, did you?

There is a note, right near the top:

Note: Make sure to uncomment only one exec line, since that will be the last command run from the script; all the following lines will just be ignored. Do NOT attempt to background your WM by appending a `&` to the line.

Please make more of an effort to help yourself: the boards aren't for handholding and the wiki documentation for this sort of entry level configuration is comprehensive.

Re: [SOLVED] new install Xorg not starting

I did catch that before you posted. I have been working on this for a few hours, so I would not surprised I made some mistakes. There issue is still the same. I am getting the same errors on the logs.

First time I installed arch it took me over 6 hours and 3 re-installs, but I had a great sense of pride once I figured it out. I still learn something new every time I install it. Stay with it, and you'll figure it out.

Re: [SOLVED] new install Xorg not starting

I'd start from scratch. Don't follow random tutorials on the web, just use the relevant wiki page.

Re: [SOLVED] new install Xorg not starting

ok for testing this is what I did

1. I removed my .xinitrc file
2. created a new xorg.conf file and placed it in the /etc/X11 directory
3. then I performed the test sudo X -config /etc/X11/xorg.conf

I got a blank screen so I killed the X session then tried to it with startx and got the same error. So I believe the xorg.conf file is good but I do not understand what is killing it when I try to use startx???

Re: [SOLVED] new install Xorg not starting

ok I went through the xinitrc wiki again and noticed it said that I either can use either startx or 'xinit -- :1 -nolisten tcp vt$XDG_VTNR'. Since startx was not working so I tried the other option and low and behold xterm was up! My keyboard was not working but I am betting that is something in Xorg I need to look at. Making progress! Would any anyone know why one would work and not the other?

This feels like a doctor trying to stop a patient from bleeding out while he simultaneously stabbing his patient with more holes to find the scalpel he left in there.
Jasons Advice is looking like the most expedient solution...
That being said, if you plan on reviving this puppy you'll need an .xinitrc file:
https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/xinitrc as it's used by xinit to start the xserver. Or to put it another way, it's used to startx, So RTFM. <3

*hint: use the skeleton.

Re: [SOLVED] new install Xorg not starting

I already installed those drivers.

[herminio@archlinux-vm ~]$ sudo pacman -Ss xf86-input-vmmouse
[sudo] password for herminio:
extra/xf86-input-vmmouse 13.0.0-5 (xorg-drivers xorg) [installed]
    X.org VMWare Mouse input driver
[herminio@archlinux-vm ~]$ sudo pacman -Ss xf86-video-vmware
extra/xf86-video-vmware 13.0.2-2 (xorg-drivers xorg) [installed]
    X.org vmware video driver
[herminio@archlinux-vm ~]$ sudo pacman -Ss svga-dri
extra/mesa-dri 10.3.3-1 [installed]
    Mesa DRI drivers
[herminio@archlinux-vm ~]$

I am thinking it is time to start from scratch. The biggest lesson I am learning from this is don't be like the dad who just glances at the instructions to building his kid' s bike. I will keep you all posted.

I got a new installation of arch. I went through the wiki carefully. When I got to the part when I was to run startx I got a similar error.

Re: [SOLVED] new install Xorg not starting

I installed the xf86-video-vmware-git from the AUR and now I can startx from the vm terminal and all is working! This can be marked marked as solved. Thanks!
