First fix the first error, maybe this solves your problem. Because it looks like X is just running fine.

check which version of nvidia driver is installed with:

modinfo nvidia

See the version at line "version: xxx.xx"

Now make sure that /usr/lib/xorg/modules/extensions/libglx.so points to libglx.so.xxx.xx (I think in your case it doesn't)

This should solve the error with libglx.so, and maybe solves your problem.

Also check this thread first. I had similar issues with X and XFCE4 https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=190358

Re: [SOLVED] startx flashes nVidia logo then BLACKNESS

I checked out what you said, my version of 340.58 did not match anything in extensions. i found a bunch of libglx.so files that were empty.  they were like libglx.so.1 and so on.

Re: [SOLVED] startx flashes nVidia logo then BLACKNESS

ls -la /usr/lib/xorg/modules/extensions/

total 308
drwxr-xr-x 2 root root   4096 Nov 26 18:48 .
drwxr-xr-x 7 root root   4096 Nov 26 17:31 ..
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root     16 Nov 26 18:48 libglx.so -> libglx.so.340.58
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root     16 Nov 26 18:48 libglx.so.1 -> libglx.so.340.58
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root     16 Oct  4 02:31 libglx.so.1_OLD -> libglx.so.343.22
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root     56 Nov 26 18:48 libglx.so.340.58 -> /usr/lib/nvidia/xorg/modules/extensions/libglx.so.340.58
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root     56 Oct  4 02:31 libglx.so.343.22_OLD -> /usr/lib/nvidia/xorg/modules/extensions/libglx.so.343.22
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root     16 Oct  4 02:31 libglx.so_OLD -> libglx.so.343.22
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 303296 Nov 10 18:56 libglx.xorg

this is what it looks like on my machine.

libglx.so.340.58 has to point to the actual file located in /usr/lib/nvidia/xorg/modules/extensions/libglx.so.340.58 and
libglx.so and libglx.so.1 both have to point to libglx.so.340.58

Re: [SOLVED] startx flashes nVidia logo then BLACKNESS

are the files suppose to be empty though? i checked and they are just blank files it seems? and where would i get the correct one for 340.58?

Re: [SOLVED] startx flashes nVidia logo then BLACKNESS

They are empty if they link to nothing. But /usr/lib/nvidia/xorg/modules/extensions/libglx.so.340.58 exists, doesn't it?

edit:
in order to avoid misunderstandings, by pointing I mean symlinking a file to another with "ln -s"

Re: [SOLVED] startx flashes nVidia logo then BLACKNESS

there is

libglx.so
libglx.so.1
libglx.so.343.22

im just confused as to why it worked one time then was dead after restart.

i will say i did install synaptics for my touchpad prior to rebooting. i wasn't sure if touchpad drivers would effect video but its all else i can think that i did while it was working.

Re: [SOLVED] startx flashes nVidia logo then BLACKNESS

What do you mean by a neverending black screen?  The log shows that X exited successfully very shortly after starting.  Also "succesfully" is a key word there - this is almost always due to a faulty xinitrc.  How do you start X?  What is in your ~/.xinitrc?

Re: [SOLVED] startx flashes nVidia logo then BLACKNESS

Nvidia logo flashes and it goes from like backlit black and fades to no backlit black like the screen has no power

i start X with

startx

.xinitrc has

exec openbox-session

thing is tho i cant even get default X to start. you know with the three terminal prompts.

i mean i really dont see where iw ent wrong. i used 340xx when prompted for xorg-server xorg-utils xorg-xinit

then i installed xf86-video-nouveau

but im sitting on a fresh install right now. im just kinda hesitant to pull the trigger and mess it all up again lol.

Re: [SOLVED] startx flashes nVidia logo then BLACKNESS

Wait, did you install nvidia-340xx or nouveau? They're not compatible, so you can't have both.

I also run a macbook pro 5,5 with nvidia, and once nvidia is started, I can't go back to the console. So that if X stops, then the screen remains blank. This has been true ever since I started using the nvidia driver over a year ago.

here is a video of whats going on. you can see after the nvidia loads and blacks out that the lcd litteraly fades to an even darker black. im not sure what that even is.

im left with no choice but to hit the power button to shut off the machine. so i only hit it once so it will shut itself off, which might be why its terminating successfully.

Re: [SOLVED] startx flashes nVidia logo then BLACKNESS

That looks a bit suspicious to me:

[    56.871] (==) Matched nvidia as autoconfigured driver 0
[    56.871] (==) Matched nouveau as autoconfigured driver 1

Somehow I guess there's still something badly mixed up wrt nvidia vs nouveau and  mesa-* packages.

Re: [SOLVED] startx flashes nVidia logo then BLACKNESS

But do you hit the power button after just 3 seconds?

Re: [SOLVED] startx flashes nVidia logo then BLACKNESS

itman:  im not sure how. i did a fresh install and all i did was put the 340xx in there

trilby: i waited multiple amounts of time. 3 seconds. 3 minutes, even got frustrated and let it sit for an hour prior to restart

Re: [SOLVED] startx flashes nVidia logo then BLACKNESS

My question was how long did you wait the times you showed logs for.  Both logs show that X exited successfully after about 3 seconds.  This makes me doubt that we are even following the right problem.

If, like hbar, your system could work normally, but when X exits it just leaves a black screen, then your problem might have nothing to do with video drivers - but rather your problem would only be why X is exiting 3 seconds after it starts.  If that is really the issue, the problem lies in your xinitrc.  Again, the logs you are showing are not indicating any fatal problem: they show only successful completion of everything X was supposed to do within 3 seconds.

Re: [SOLVED] startx flashes nVidia logo then BLACKNESS

at this point  i have openbox installed
and my .xinitrc says

exec openbox-session

and i counted the time from startx to black and its 3 seconds.

and its still sitting now, it has been for a minute or two just sitting on black.

did a reboot after it sat on black for a little bit.

my question is. with a blank xinitrc and no window manager installed shouldn't it default back to the basic X interface anyway?

Re: [SOLVED] startx flashes nVidia logo then BLACKNESS

The "DESCRIPTION" section of the xinit man page explains that the X server is shut down once all of the commands in .xinitrc are run. If you start an xterm instead of openbox, does it work?

When the screen is blank, if you type

systemctl reboot

does the system reboot?

Re: [SOLVED] startx flashes nVidia logo then BLACKNESS

If xterm works, then the graphics stuff was all going in the wrong direction.  The only problem then is that openbox isn't starting.  You could try the following in your xinitrc to get a little more information:

exec openbox-session >~/openbox.log 2>&1

Then after if fails, check what is in ~/openbox.log

Also, you could try just openbox rather than openbox-session.

Re: [SOLVED] startx flashes nVidia logo then BLACKNESS

Alright, is there a libEGL.so.1 in /usr/lib ? It should be provided by nvidia-340xx-libgl which is a dependency of nvidia-340xx .

Re: [SOLVED] startx flashes nVidia logo then BLACKNESS

i installed option 3 which was 340xx when promted during xorg packages.

i didnt find the libEGL.so.1 i found nothing.
BUT

i checked to make sure i actually had the nvidia-340xx-libgl and i did not

i had nvidia-libgl not nvidia-340xx-libgl

i replaced nvidia-libgl with the correct nvidia-340xx-libgl

i now have libEGL.so   but not libEGL.so.1

Re: [SOLVED] startx flashes nVidia logo then BLACKNESS

they should be in /usr/lib/nvidia/  (https://www.archlinux.org/packages/extr … ils/files/)

And I remind you that I had a similar issue in the thread I posted above:

Resauce wrote:

Solved it on my own. The hint with xfce was good though.
xfce4-session tried to load /usr/lib/libEGL.so.1 and /usr/lib/LibGL.so.1. These files weren't present.
They were in /usr/lib/nvidia/ as shown here https://www.archlinux.org/packages/extr … ils/files/
so pointing to them did it.

Maybe this solution applies for openbox too, since the error is the same.

Re: [SOLVED] startx flashes nVidia logo then BLACKNESS

Now I'm confused. You installed the package nvidia-340xx-libgl which installed libEGL.so but not libEGL.so.1 ?

Re: [SOLVED] startx flashes nVidia logo then BLACKNESS

thats what it looks like.

i checked the directory prior to the package being added and there was no libEGL of any sort

switched nvidia-libgl with the nvidia-340-libgl and the libEGL.so was there. but still no so.1

you think your confused. i keep thinking im making this worse with each keystroke at this point lol
