[SOLVED] cannot open mixer: Operation not permitted

I use alsaequal, it worked until a recent update, now it does this:

# alsamixer -D equal
ALSA lib ctl_equal.c:289:(_snd_ctl_equal_open) Problem with control file .alsaequal.bin.
cannot open mixer: Operation not permitted

How do I fix this?

Re: [SOLVED] cannot open mixer: Operation not permitted

I stopped using alsaequal, only to find that someone had to go and re-break the oxygen driver, now I can't control volume, and have no EQ. Why even update if the update adds no functonality, stability or bug fixes and instead breaks everything.

Nice to know, I am not alone. I experience that problem too since the latest update. Had no time to look deeper into it though.

Pinky, are you pondering what I'm pondering?

This is probably caused by your user not being in the audio group. Have a look at usermod

Re: [SOLVED] cannot open mixer: Operation not permitted

Try

gpasswd -a USER audio

then either restart getty or

su USER

and try

alsamixer -D equal

again. Replace "USER" with your username.

Hey, thanks for your hints. Both users I have tried with are in the audio group.

Re: [SOLVED] cannot open mixer: Operation not permitted

It looks like the old .alsaequal.bin files are not compatible with current version anymore. after (re)moving old .alsaequal.bin files alsaequal works again for me.

That was it. Thanks. The Oxygen driver is still broken, but that's for a different thread.
