dear arch experts: I am a novice here, coming over from ubuntu... I tried my first arch install on both virtualbox and vmware fusion, and the error is repeatable.
I am following the beginner's install guide. first, download iso and check md5 (good). boot arch iso from virtual cd drive (good). I am omitting the keyboard step, presuming this works just fine. then I partition and format the disks (good, except for bad partition id for 1; I am using fat32 but the type is set to linux; partition 2 is formatted ext4). then I mount the /dev/sda2 root (/mnt) and the /dev/sda2 boot disk (/mnt/boot), (good). I fix up /etc/pacman.d/mirrorlist (good) and run "pacman -Syyu". this starts downloading about 20 packages for about 10 minutes (good), then starts installing (good for a while), and then...all hell breaks loose. bus errors, Buffer I/O errors, notes that data will be lost, etc. it all scrolls by way too quickly to see much. my failure to boot is replicable every time. obviously, I did not get far (not even to base). fortunately, I presume this means that I couldn't have contributed much too my malaise.
I don't know if this is the same error as https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=190422 . this one says to increase COW size, but without further instructions. I think this is a btrfs bug.
is arch not able to run in a VM? or in virtualbox and vmware fusion? or is 2014.12.01 broken? [ps: ubuntu installs work fine on same hardware and virtual machines.]

apparently, this is specific to the "pacman -Syyu" step. if omitted, it seems to be possible to continue. the rest will proceed as planned. just run the "pacman -Syyu" step after the first boot into the new arch install.
