The consensus for dealing with the Fan always on with 3.18.2-2 problem is to either downgrade the Linux kernel from 3.18 to 3.17 or install Linux-LTS. I'm unfamiliar with this version of the kernel except for what it says on at Wikipedia about Long Term Support. I gather from this article LTS is the same kernel, but on a longer update cycle (with security patches).
For Arch, what all is entailed in switching to Linux-LTS?
- At the very least I will need to edit grub.cfg (and for me that also means editing grub.cfg for dual boot).
- Pacman shows:
- core/linux-lts 3.14.31-1
- core/linux-lts-headers 3.14.31-1
- extra/nvidia-lts 346.35-2
- community/tp_smapi-lts 0.41-35 (maybe, or maybe not)
- Rebuild mkinitcpio?
Is that it? Did I miss anything? Anything I can omit? Anything I shouldn't omit?

Not a Kernel issue, moving to NC...

If you're editing grub.cfg by hand you're doing it wrong.

It's as simple as installing the linux-lts package and lts versions of modules you use. Then you grub-mkconfig, eventually adjusting the boot order (as described in GRUB/Tips and tricks).
Mods are just community members who have the occasionally necessary option to move threads around and edit posts. -- Trilby

Install linux-lts and linux-lts-headers. If you prefer to have additional entries in bootloader you must make them. Or else just use the default + fallback entries and ensure it points to the linux-lts kernel. Rebuild grub or whichever you use, rebuild mkinitcpio.
Nvidia-lts = do you have an nvidia card?
tp_smapi-lts = do you have a thinkpad and currently use this set of modules?
Don't be afraid to read the wiki and give it a shot. Keep a bootable usb with you though in case you forgot a step you can always mount and arch-chroot to fix her up.

Opps. I actually have an ATI,
$ lspci -k | grep -A 2 -i "VGA"
01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. [AMD/ATI] RV635/M86 [Mobility Radeon HD 3650]
Subsystem: Lenovo Device 2127
Kernel driver in use: radeon
I misinterpreted the version numbers from NVIVIA:
extra/nvidia-304xx-lts 304.125-2
NVIDIA drivers for linux-lts, 304xx legacy branch
...and thought 3650 was the newer version of 304xx.
I have a ThinkPad W500. As the two links on the `/tp_smapi-lts` line indicate, the Arch Wiki recommends installing this if you have a ThinkPad, but the ThinkWiki site suggests there may not be support for my W500.
Then it sounds like I just need to install the kernel and the headers, then rebuild grub.cfg. I have my original install LiveCD, so I should be good to go.
Thanks for the heads up.

If you're using the catalyst package, I recommend switching to the catalyst-hook package and using the service to deal with the fglrx module.
I think the xf86-video-ati should work just fine with lts.
Claire is fine.
Problems? I have dysgraphia, so clear and concise please.

I seem to recall skipping the Catalyst package for some reason. Thanks for mentioning it here. If video starts giving me problems, I'll try there first (^_^)
