Hello all,
I try to update xorg-server and end up in a loop where xf86-input-evdev is in conflict with xorg-server, but I cannot remove it because xorg-server requires xf86-input-evdev...
archlinux # uname -a
Linux neurarch24 3.17.2-1-ARCH #1 SMP PREEMPT Thu Oct 30 20:49:39 CET 2014 x86_64 GNU/Linux
archlinux # pacman -Ss xorg-server
extra/xorg-server 1.17.1-4 (xorg) [installed: 1.15.2-1]
Xorg X server
<snip>
archlinux # pacman -S xorg-server

:: xorg-server and xf86-video-ati are in conflict (X-ABI-VIDEODRV_VERSION). Remove xf86-video-ati? [y/N] y
error: failed to prepare transaction (could not satisfy dependencies)
:: xorg-server: requires xf86-input-evdev
:: catalyst-utils: requires xorg-server<1.16.0
what should I do?
Thanks!

You need to fully update your system, including taking care of your AUR packages.

hmmm... I removed all catalyst / ati related packages, and now I get a bit further, but still end up in the conflict loop
archlinux # pacman -S xorg-server

so I would use yaourt instead of pacman to update the system?

Yaourt is never the answer to this sort of question.
Remove any AUR packages, do a full -Syyu upgrade and then reinstall the AUR packages.
Not a Pacman issue, moving to NC...

The description for NC says "Beginners' subforum for general Arch issues. Please consult the excellent Arch wiki and web before posting."
Your problem - not having the system fully updated - fits my idea of a newbie error. Basic issues belong to NC.
