Cinnamon crashes after package upgrade today

Last upgrade was yesterday and it was ok.

Not sure how to deal with this kind of problem.

Is anybody even looking into what goes into the package builds, or some stuff just gets pulled from the repository, whatever the latest version is there?

I know many AUR packages just pull the latest github version.

I've got the same problem, and gdm broke for me too today, the only thing that works now is gnome-session.
I tried downgrading the cinnamon package but it still won't make a difference, I guess this goes together with the gtk3 upgrade as well as possibly other stuff.

I've never had anything break that wasn't gnome developer related

No, cinnamonfix.sh from there doesn't help.

I am new to arch, not sure how to get the list of last updates.

I did make it executable and rebooted, it didn't help in my case.

This is among the worst that can happen with the packaging system. I had package manager being unable to upgrade due to some internal problems (on Gentoo and on Mint). And now here it updates to the broken state.

Is there a way to restore packages to what they were on a particular date? 2 days ago would be great.

This worked for me.

# sudo touch /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc.d/cinnamonfix.sh
# sudo chmod 755 /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc.d/cinnamonfix.sh

Using a text editor (nano/vi), edit the new file and save it with the following content.

#!/bin/bash
export CLUTTER_BACKEND=x11

Reboot, and you should be good to go.

For me, Cinnamon was going into fallback mode, and I have Guake dropdown terminal auto start when I login.  So I was able to do all of this there pretty easily.

summarize and combine all the necessary solution!

In addition of adding the export CLUTTER_BACKEND=x11 to /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc.d/
I had to add "export CLUTTER_BACKEND=x11" line to my ~/.xinitrc as well (before exec cinnamon-session), because I use startx ...

Then, I had to fix muffin simply by installing metacity package itself.

Just for info: everything is fixed today with the lastest update.
No workaround is necessary anymore.
