Errors Installing Nvidia drivers

Good evening all.

I just finished installing Arch Linux today and I am looking to install a GUI now. Although I am having trouble downloading the drivers.

The graphics card in my laptop is the NVS 5400M. It is a part of the NVC1 (GF108) codename.

Following the wiki, I use the following:

# pacman -S nvidia

Many, many errors appear, the last of which being:

"warning: failed to retrieve some files
error: failed to commit transaction (download library error)"

I have traced it down to be something wrong with either my mirrors, or my DNS is not resolving any hosts.

Is there any way to reconfigure my network, if this is the case?

Please tell me if I need to post more information.

Thank you all for your help.

Re: Errors Installing Nvidia drivers

Please post the full output, not just the part that you think is relevant.

Remember to use code tags.

Have you tried another mirror?

Re: Errors Installing Nvidia drivers

Did you recently upgrade your system?
I'm not sure whether this is an error message that corresponds to a lack of a recent update, but I sometimes had problems, when the last update was a little older.
Regarding the fact, that you "finished installing [...] today", I don't think this is the case, but who knows.

Do you have internet connection? Try 'ping 8.8.8.8' and if this does not work try pinging your router.

If not, could you please post the whole output from 'pacman -S nvidia' ?
And maybe your /etc/pacman.d/mirrorlist ?

Re: Errors Installing Nvidia drivers

In searching NVidia's site for the driver for your video card, it appears that you need the 346 series driver.  The current version of the nvidia package is 349, which apparently does not have support for your video card any longer.  So if you install the nvidia-340xx package, it should install.  There is an nvidia-346xx-dkms package, but I'm not sure if you want to wait for it to comile or not.

Re: Errors Installing Nvidia drivers

Apologies, I am new to this.

I will post a picture of the full output, as too many errors output too fast for me to read.

I also do not know how to reply to single individual, so apologies for that and the time it will take to post this. My internet is pretty slow.

I will post the mirrorlist after this post. Pinging www.google.com does not work. ping: unknown host

Re: Errors Installing Nvidia drivers

The important part is that it could not resolve host, which means that your internet is not connected.
What is the ouput of ip link?

Re: Errors Installing Nvidia drivers

Ok, so which interface is it that you are  planning to use?  Have you installed like networkmanager or wicd or something similar at all yet?
Also, sometimes when I'm having problems, I start the dhcpcd server manually.

Re: Errors Installing Nvidia drivers

If you do not mind me asking how would I go about starting the dhcpcd server manually?

I am not sure as to which interface I am planning on using, which would you recommend? I have not installed networkmanager, I know that.

I might try to connect with ethernet

Re: Errors Installing Nvidia drivers

To start the dhcp server manually, you open up a terminal window, change to root, and issue

dpcpcd &

The ampersand at the end disconnects it from the terminal so that it runs in the background.

"NO-CARRIER" usually means that you're not physically connected to the network. If you're on a wired connection, make sure the cable is connected (at both ends).

This is probably the easiest way.
The relevant interface is the one starting with enp.

At least the wireless interface(s) seem(s) to be already properly recognized, on my MacBook it was not.
Btw, can somebody say, what the difference between wlp* and wwp* is?

If you want to establish a wireless internet connection you should probably have a look at the wiki.

Re: Errors Installing Nvidia drivers

Thank you for the replies everyone.

I will be attempting to update my drivers over Ethernet in about an hour or so.

Thank you all again so much for taking the time to reply.
