Via GNOME I can't start Terminal, nor Chrome(/chromium), nor VLC but Firefox works.
What can it be the issue? What logs do I have to look at?

Start Chromium or VLC from a terminal (other than Gnome-terminal, obviously) and read the error message that is printed...

They didn't want to be run as root (so I created a .xinitrc in ~/ with "exec gnome-shell")
Still the terminal doesn't work

Why are you trying to run X apps, and your browser as root?
"doesn't work" is not an error message...

I didn't mean to, but I made .xinitrc in /root while I was logged in as root.
Now I've put in my home directory and it works fine without root.
"doesn't work" is not an error message...
That's why in my first post I asked what logs I have to look at

Fixed; the problem was it didn't set LC_ALL, so a quick search led me to find the fix
