Clicking/Poping sound from intel hda

In every laptop I came accross in my life I have experiance with this clicking sound. This happend when module have power_save mode to 1 as well as power_save_controller is Y. Issue was easy to mitigate all the time until I encounter kernel 4.1.4-*. Wheather I specify in grub

snd_hda_inte.power_save=0 snd_hda_intel.power_save_controller=N

or in modprobe situation is same. Kernel accept those values and powersave mode is off but again I hear clicking sound.

Right now the only solution is to do:

rmmod -f snd_hda_intel

and

modprobe snd_hda_intel power_save=0

,

I saw there were  few changess in snd_intel module, as can be seen here:
https://www.kernel.org/pub/linux/kernel … eLog-4.1.4

My question: Does anyone experiance same issue? If so, I can debug this, and send report to kernel guys!

Re: Clicking/Poping sound from intel hda

When do you hear the clicking/popping?

I haven't yet had time to investigate, but on my lenovo T450, I have been getting a pretty annoying click or pop when some programs start or stop playing sound.  For me it is a single click when the program starts and another when it stops - almost like speakers were just plugged in then unplugged.  A power saving mode seems like a potential explanation for these symptoms - so I'll try these settings later today.  But is this the same sort of clicking you are hearing?

Whenever threre is start or stop access to my sound card. For example: start playing song/ stop playing song. There is no clicking sound while song is playing, only start/end reproduce this issue. There is also possiblity to delay POWER_SAVE mode in
, but this doesn't help cos it's only delaying clicking for
.

My laptop is "Acer Asipre V15 Nitro"

@Trilby
Yes, we have same issue, you can try with something like I wrote above, and If you still hear clicking noise, can you please revert kernel from 4.1.4-1 to 4.0.9-2 and perform some test like "playing/stopping audio/video clip" with power_save=0

thx

Re: Clicking/Poping sound from intel hda

No luck here - I still have the clicking even when I rmmod and modprobe with the option set to zero.  I will not be able to try downgradng for a while.

EDIT: FWIW, I actually don't get this very often it seems.  I am getting this sound when running a program compiled against SFML with their audio module, but youtube or videos in my web browser do not produce this click.  So in my case, it is likely an improper use/initialization of that library.

Re: Clicking/Poping sound from intel hda

Most of the laptops I've encountered use Intel audio, and I've not encountered pops.  Stating Intel HDA does not provide the full picture.  Intel HDA is an interface that does not provide actual audio output, but rather creates a standardized digital stream that gets passed to a second chip called a "codec".   The codec takes the standardized serial stream and converts it into audio.

Take a look at the "file" /proc/asound/cards, it will tell you what intel HDA devices you have -- probably an HDMI and a PCH.  For each card, there will be a directory under /proc/asound called cardn  where n is 0,1,... Under those directories, there are "files" called codec#n (again, n=0,1,...) that contain information about the respective codec.

My system uses a Realtek ALC3241?  How about your machines?

Re: Clicking/Poping sound from intel hda

I am thinkpad x1 user, and I confirm hearing sometimes this clicking sound. After some experiments, I figured that clicking sound happens only once after boot or suspend, on the first access to sound device (when I start program that actually play sounds), regardless of power_save option.

My system uses Realtek ALC3232

Re: Clicking/Poping sound from intel hda

@ewaller

My intel HDA uses Realtek ALC283. Interesting part is that on every execution of

cat /proc/asound/card1/codec\#0

I enouncter popping noise.

In earlier kernel < 4.1.4-1 there was no such noise at all, so this is reason why I think is somehow kernel regression.

Also, note that files in /etc/modprobe.d/ must have .conf suffix or they are ignored.

Sure, /sys/module/snd_hda_intel/parameters/power_save is 0.

Strange thing is that after rmmod and modprobe, there is no poping sound anymore.

Here is alsa info when poping sound appears:

Re: Clicking/Poping sound from intel hda

And all other parameters are the same? Nothing messing with them during boot? I wonder what would happen if you blacklist this module and load it by hand?

Re: Clicking/Poping sound from intel hda

I have a new T450s with similar issue.  Whenever pulseaudio starts, this loud pop occurs.  It happens whenever I load snd_hda_intel as well.  I have not noticed an issue during day to day use, though I haven't had this machine very long.  The issue only occurs when GDM starts, and after I log in.

UPDATE:

Okay, yes there is popping when starting a new audio during an existing session.

I tried creating a file in /etc/modprobe.d/snd_hda_intel.conf with the following contents, but it doesn't work.  The parameters are still 1 and Y after a boot.

options snd_hda_intel power_save=0 power_save_controller=N

Re: Clicking/Poping sound from intel hda

Ok, as we all know, poping/clicking sound is produced when there is enabled power_save mode in kernel. But in my situation this goes a litle further.

It seems that laptop-mode-tools are causing this iritating sound. When I disable service or remove laptop-mode-tools, popping sound is gone, and real values are attached to current running kernel using modprobe.conf with line consisting of power_save=0..  In config of intel-hda-powersave.conf of laptop-mode-tools, powersave options is disabled, and that option is applyed also to running kernel, but probably some other audio power options is causing this, I will try to disable ac97 even I dont have it in my laptop..

Re: Clicking/Poping sound from intel hda

I can't figure out how to disable power_save on boot.  I tried the following in my loader's options entry:

snd_hda_inte.power_save=0 snd_hda_intel.power_save_controller=N

I created a file /etc/modprobe.d/snd_hda_intel.conf with the following:

options snd_hda_intel power_save=0 power_save_controller=N

I even created /etc/modules-load.d/snd_hda_intel.conf to try to load the module on boot:

snd_hda_intel

But even with all of this, after logging in via GDM, looking at the values in /sys/module/snd_hda_intel/parameters/ I see that power save is stil on.

Manually unloading and loading the module works, but I'd like to be able to have it disabled automagically on boot.

Disabling the power save does indeed stop the clicks when a new audio source starts, but there is still the loud pop when the module is loaded.

Try to add bellow line to /etc/modprobe.d/modpobe.conf

options snd_hda_intel model=auto power_save=0

reboot, and then see state of

cat /sys/module/snd_hda_intel/parameters/power_save

Back to my issue:

As i wrote earlier, problem is with laptop-mode-tools. Specificaly I found out that if I stop laptop-mode.service and run manualy

sudo laptop_mode init auto

There is no poping sound at all when starting wm. So this reveals that laptop-mode.service is cousing that poping sound.
When I checked

/usr/lib/systemd/system/laptop-mode.service

I dont see nothing unusual or relvant for this particular issue:
here is service file:

[Unit]
Description=Laptop Mode Tools

[Service]
Type=oneshot
RemainAfterExit=yes
ExecStart=/usr/bin/laptop_mode init auto
ExecStop=/usr/bin/laptop_mode init stop
ExecStopPost=/bin/rm -f /var/run/laptop-mode-tools/enabled

Re: Clicking/Poping sound from intel hda

@markoer and others,

Yes, I've been experiencing a similar thing on a Thinkpad T440S. Namely, if I disable TLP powersavings, no "popping" on start-up while running on battery (I also don't have the "popping" while running on AC).

I can live with it for now and it will most likely be corrected and disappear in an upcoming kernel release.

Re: Clicking/Poping sound from intel hda

I have an issue like this on a XPS-13 9343, although only after upgrading to the I2S-enabled 4.4 kernel. Every time the sound card starts playing (if it's been idle for a few seconds), I get a loud, annoying POP, accompanied by the following in my dmesg:

haswell-pcm-audio haswell-pcm-audio: FW loaded, mailbox readback FW info: type 01, - version: 00.00, build 77, source commit id: 876ac6906f31a43b6772b23c7c983ce9dcb18a19

It seems there's some aggressive power management going on, if firmware gets loaded whenever I start playing sound (after a few seconds idle). However, /sys/module/snd_hda_intel/parameters/power_save is set to 0 and /sys/module/snd_hda_intel/parameters/power_save_controller is set to N. I rmmod'ed and modprobed it with those parameters.

The problem exists no matter if I use PulseAudio or not, and I don't have laptop-mode-tools installed.

Re: Clicking/Poping sound from intel hda

I'm having a similar issue @skongshoj, but only when I'm using my headphones.

[ 2664.624393] haswell-pcm-audio haswell-pcm-audio: FW loaded, mailbox readback FW info: type 01, - version: 00.00, build 77, source commit id: 876ac6906f31a43b6772b23c7c983ce9dcb18a19

I also have a dell xps13 9343. This recently start happening when I upgraded from linux 4.3 to 4.4. I think it is weird that it says haswell, since I have a broadwell.

Oddly as well is the fact that the popping sound only happens when there is no sound being played.

Re: Clicking/Poping sound from intel hda

I doubt that's the issue - that module probably contains functionality that's common to Broadwell and Haswell.

I also have the snd-soc-sst-broadwell module loaded, btw.

Re: Clicking/Poping sound from intel hda

Is there anyway to go back to the hda sound, but still using 4.4 kernel? I'm not sure if it is a problem with I2S or with the module snd_soc_sst_broadwell, but before things seems to work alright. Perhaps, going back to HDA till I understand how to fix this popping sound would be good. Any ideas?

Are you sure you only get it when no audio is playing? I have the same issue, but it's always happening with headphones connected.

Re: Clicking/Poping sound from intel hda

Hi Segfried - I get the popping sound when I have the headphones plugged to the 3.5mm headphone jack and there is no audio being played. If I unplug the headphone and I have no issues, that is, audio works normally. With headphones plugged, audio playing and builtin speakers muted there is a very tiny noise that pops periodically, just like the when using headphones with no audio.

I found some other threads where people talk about this issue. Their solution though rely on downgrading to 4.3 or compiling the kernel without I2S support, relying on HDA sound instead. Since I'm not using headphones that much I will just wait for coming upgrades and see if the situation gets better.

Alright, that matches my behavior. Is there any way to use modprobe to force HDA mode, or does the kernel need to be recompiled because it's a quirk?

Re: Clicking/Poping sound from intel hda

It sounds like for some of the clicking/popping issues in this thread it would be worth trying the 'position_fix' option described in: https://git.kernel.org/cgit/linux/kerne … s/v4.5-rc4

Edit: It's also mentioned in: https://git.kernel.org/cgit/linux/kerne … s/v4.5-rc4

(I don't think it applies to everyone in thread, though.)

Hi Ziusudra - Is this fix for HDA problems or it also helps to I2S?
