You still need userspace tools to control it.

You have all the needed stuff in rc.conf, but is it working? Alsa in rc.conf should save volumelevels at shutdown and load them at boot... Do you have alsa-utils installed?

Using "alsactl store" as root saves your mixer levels. The /etc/rc.d/alsa script just uses "alsactl restore" at boot time.

Why do I need the ALSA script on boot?
I don't have it now and still my sound works good, is there other way?

You need to put alsa in your rc.conf's services list to get the volumes right!

just edit /etc/rc.conf and put alsactl restore at the very bottom before #END OF FILE. That'll restore it and you won't have to mess with all this alsa nonsense...a lot easier.

Jazz: that's definitely not a good solution.
Your rc.conf is loaded to start every daemon, and a whole range of other things. This means your volume is being 'restored' every time you run anything in /etc/rc.d and then some.
And besides that.... it's much simpler to put 'alsa' in the DAEMONS=() line further up in the file. Heck, it's even less typing!
