[SOLVED] CUPS and "Filter failed" Error

Hello!

There are already two old topics on this issue, but both of them are archived or closed (one, two), and the cups versions used there are ancient, so I'm reopening this issue here.

Basically, I am using cups 2.0..4-1 and hplip 3.15.7-1 to print with an HP LaserJet Pro MLP150nw. It took me two days to get it working on Windows, and I'm still having trouble running it on Arch 64. The printer installs fine and is recognized by the hp-setup, but it refuses to print anything, not even the test page from the hp toolbox will come through.

I installed the foomatic-filters and foomatic-db-engine as suggested in one of the older threads.

I'm running 64bit an have lib32-glibc, lib32-gcc-libs lib32-libstdc++5 installed.

I also tried accessing the printer as a smb resource on my windows machine, to the same result.

Unfortunatley, gutenprint is not an option as this particular HP model requires the hpjip plugin, and isn't supported by gutenprint.

What could be the next steps to debug this?

Have you tried the Foomatic or Gutenprint packages? I have had a lot more success with the Foomatic drivers than with the HP drivers for my HP printers.

Edit: Ack -- I did not read below those pictures. What happened with the Foomatic drivers?

Sometimes (i.e. I cannot reliably reproduce this), after installing the foo- packages, the jobs get stuck at "Rendering finished" instead, but the job still does not get sent to the printer.

I am having the same problem with my LasereJet Pro M125a, although I am using the vanilla hplip and hplip-plugin driver. But according to this topic, this is a known issue that should be solved in the next hplip update. Downgrading to 3.15.6 should resolve the issue but I did not have time to test this yet.

I dowgraded hplip to 3.14.10 using the "downgrade" AUR-package, but that results in all hp- utils crashing with "AttributeError 'module' object has no attribute 'EOF'. Downgrade only gives me the options 3.15.7 (local) and 3.14.10 and downwards (remote), not 3.15.6. How would I go about getting that particular release of the hplip-package?

I did live to see it - this finally fixed it!

Solution in a nutshell:

Downgrade hplip to this version (extract, run makepkg -i in the /trunk subdir)
Delete the printer and the print queue
Manually run sudo hp-plugin to force-update the plugin
Manually run sudo hp-setup -i to reinstall the printer
