[SOLVED] Nvidia drivers messing up external monitors

I'm having issues with the nvidia driver on a fresh install. Getting the "nvidia" package results in messed up external monitor results. The computer is an Asus G75 laptop with the nvidia GTX 670MX card, I work with two external monitors, one via VGA and one by HDMI (with an HDMI to VGA adapter). A little of background, before doing the fresh install I had no problems, the initial setup was a little of a hassle as the dsiplay array would sometimes mess up but that's about it. For some reason I think I was runinng a previous version of the driver, 340, 304 but not the nvidia-current/nvidia package.

The built in display works fin but the HDMI monitor is sort of working, nvidia-settings detect the display but every info about it is unknown and the resolution is set to 480p, the panel is a 19" 720p thing. Then we have the VGA one, this from the nvidia config appears to be ok as it displays all the info of the monitor correctly: brand, model, size and resolution; but the actual resolution on the display appears to be squished to an aspect ratio of 4:3 or limited to 1024x758.
I have tried rolling back to nvidia-340xx and many more but this always end in a bootloop. Now I'm afraid of messing up with the driver, this is the 4th time I do a fresh install, I also tried to fixing the loop chrooting without results.

Thanks in advance.

Re: [SOLVED] Nvidia drivers messing up external monitors

Please read the forum etiquette, especially bumping.

Additional information could include (but should not be limited to):
-have you ever had 2 external monitors working? (most laptops with multiple video outputs can only use 1 at a time)
-have you tried a normal hdmi monitor? perhaps the hdmi-vga adapter is messing up the info?

Re: [SOLVED] Nvidia drivers messing up external monitors

Sorry for the bump, I really am.
Yes, before the fresh install everything worked like a charm so the one-output-at-a-time is discarded. I had to do the reset thanks to a problem on boot that I just couldn't fix so a fresh install turned into my solution.
Normal HDMI worked just fine. I would not blame the adapter as nothing was done to it. While the computer went through the formatting process the thing was just sitting there, plugged. And I said, before it worked just fine.

I finally did this thread because I could't find anything remotely similar or a fix anywhere.
What kind of log would help?

Re: [SOLVED] Nvidia drivers messing up external monitors

Check this post.

For you it would probably be dmesg and /var/log/Xorg.0.log

Could you please post the complete xorg.log rather than an excerpt and also any config files from /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/

There are 3 files in xorg.conf.d as shown below.

50-synaptics.conf:

Re: [SOLVED] Nvidia drivers messing up external monitors

Thank you for the config and log files.  I should have also asked for /etc/X11/xorg.conf.

[ 10.959] (II) NVIDIA(0): Setting mode "LVDS-0: nvidia-auto-select @1920x1080 +0+0 {ViewPortIn=1920x1080, ViewPortOut=1920x1080+0+0}, VGA-0: nvidia-auto-select @1366x768 +1920+0 {ViewPortIn=1366x768, ViewPortOut=1366x768+0+0}"
[ 11.120] (II) NVIDIA(0): Setting mode "VGA-0: nvidia-auto-select @1366x768 +0+0 {ViewPortIn=1366x768, ViewPortOut=1366x768+0+0}"
[ 11.948] (II) NVIDIA(0): Setting mode "VGA-0: nvidia-auto-select @1366x768 +0+0 {ViewPortIn=1366x768, ViewPortOut=1366x768+0+0}, LVDS-0: nvidia-auto-select @1920x1080 +1366+0 {ViewPortIn=1920x1080, ViewPortOut=1920x1080+0+0}"

Seems to indicate 1920x1080 (16:9) + 1366x768 (16:9 approx) which unfortunately does not match what your displays are reporting.
Hopefully someone else might be able to offer more help

Re: [SOLVED] Nvidia drivers messing up external monitors

Does removing that xorg.conf and running X with just the other configuration files improve the situation?
If there is no improvement have you tried altering the xorg.conf based on the examples in the wiki at NVIDIA?

Wiki page on NVIDIA wrote:

The NVIDIA package includes the nvidia-settings program that allows adjustment of several additional settings

Including monitors placement. I've always used this tool. It works alright.

Re: [SOLVED] Nvidia drivers messing up external monitors

Removing xorg.conf gets things a little better.
No change for the VGA screen, nvidia-settings "outputs" 1366*768 but the screen says it's only receiving 1280*768 so that's still a little blurry, and for the HDMI resolution now tops at 1024*768 instead of 480p, image fills the 1366*768 panel, surprisingly the panel says its receiving a full 1366*768 image.
Now I'll trying stuff from the NVIDIA wiki hoping for xrandr to do something.

And yes, I have to use nvidia-settings, the standard display manager sometimes does not work right.

Re: [SOLVED] Nvidia drivers messing up external monitors

No success on xrandr.
How about an older nvidia driver? And why do I get a boot loop when I try those?

What commands did you try.  What config file changes if any were there?  What logs did these failures generate?

oscarbrito wrote:

Again you do not provide any specifics about the other nvidia drivers you tried.
Which driver packages did you try?   How far did the boot proceed?  What was the journal log of the failed boot.

Re: [SOLVED] Nvidia drivers messing up external monitors

Sorry about that.
Tried:

 xrandr --output HDMI-0 --right-of LVDS-0 --mode 1366x768

And it returned:

 xrandr: cannot find mode 1366x768

It does exactly what I can do with nvidia-settings.

Drivers tried "nvidia-340xx" and "nvidia-304xx". The as far as I could boot was to the nvidia splashscreen, sometimes even less. The screen just switched between on and all black and off. I did not recover any logs. I tried even chrooting and returning to the "nvidia" one (355.11-4).

As the Xrandr wiki page suggested,  did you run xrandr without any options to check the available outputs and modes?

oscarbrito wrote:

Manually alter your xorg.conf then to force the correct resolutions if nvidia-setting is incapable of doing it?
See link in post #12
Edit:
The title of the thread may also be putting others off reading it
It seems more an xorg.conf issue to me than drivers messing anything up.
Both displays are not being detected correctly but theres no evidence that I see showing that its the drivers to blame instead of the card or the displays.

Re: [SOLVED] Nvidia drivers messing up external monitors

Yes I did the xrandr alone and I got the same output/modes from nvidia-settings.

Here's and updated version of my xorg.conf and I don'y have to be a genius to know It looks messed up.

The only screen section to appear healthy is the AU Optronics Corporation one which is the built-in.
You are right thinking it might not be the driver but I don't have any ideas, prior to this I never had issues like this before. Maybe if I roll back to 340 or 304 hoping for something to change.

Adding_undetected_resolutions
The above should allow you to force the correct resolutions using xrandr then you can add the determined values to xorg.conf

Re: [SOLVED] Nvidia drivers messing up external monitors

I saw that but since it would only do a workaround for the resolution, not fixing the issue from its roots. I use the HDMI audio output as well and xrandr would not do anything for it. I switched from "nvidia" package to the "nvidia-340xx" and did a "nvidia-xconfig". Now I'm having the bootloop. It starts, systemd works fine > screen turns off > then it turns on again on the nvidia splashscreen > Then a black screen of a second > screen switches off and... loop, the screen turns off again on the splash and so on. Where can I get a log?

Did you not read the section below Adding_undetected_resolutions Permanently_adding_undetected_resolutions
How is using HDMI audio output related to xrandr?

The relevant logs should be xorg.log same location as before and Journal
Edit: added quotes

Edit:

How is using HDMI audio output related to xrandr?

That's it, it is not. Permanently_adding_undetected_resolutions will only fix the resolution issue, not what's causing it.
Something's going on with the outputs, video and audio, that's why I went for an older driver. Right now I want to fix the loop so I can see if the driver solves the video and audio outputs.

Edit2:
Just went though the log and noticed the external displays are now being recognized correctly:

I also noticed an error:

PS: lows I'm really thankful for your help, time and patience with this.

Re: [SOLVED] Nvidia drivers messing up external monitors

The ACPI is just an informational see bottom of xorg.0.log

[ 14.293] (II) Server terminated successfully (0). Closing log file.

Whatever command is used to start the X server is at issue X completed successfully.

Re: [SOLVED] Nvidia drivers messing up external monitors

I... I don't know, I'm lost right now. I think that was when I pressed the power button to shutdown and stop the loop, if not, it would continue to the end of times.

Correction for me, it's not a bootloop, it's just a loop at login it seems.

Right now I'm playing with the xorg.conf, I also have a liveUSB chrooted but I'm out of ideas.
