Origin of "Arch" Linux?

Where does the name "Arch" Linux originally come from?

Discuss.

Re: Origin of "Arch" Linux?

My non-educated guess:

archetype

1. An original model or type after which other similar things are patterned; a prototype: "'Frankenstein' ... 'Dracula' ... 'Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde' ... the archetypes that have influenced all subsequent horror stories" (New York Times).
2. An ideal example of a type; quintessence: an archetype of the successful entrepreneur.
3. In Jungian psychology, an inherited pattern of thought or symbolic imagery derived from past collective experience and present in the individual unconscious.

That's 3 months after he got hacked... can we really trust that source?

New question: why doesn't phrak love us? He hasn't posted here in years. Did he not see the humor in "Arch Overlard"?

The thought crossed my mind, but how could you resist basking in the glory of being called the Overlard? The only reason to hide would be to avoid a dagger in the back from Allan.

Re: Origin of "Arch" Linux?

Just did a quick wiki search, I knew it! I was a CRUX user years back and Arch reminded me of a distro I had used before, I just couldn't remember which one. Apparently, according to wiki anyway, Arch was inspired by CRUX. For those of you who don't know, here is the wiki article:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CRUX

Besides Arch and Gentoo, it was the fastest, leanest distro I have every used.

@sevendogs,

If only you had used Arch in the initscripts days. It even had an rc.conf like CRUX!

I remember rc.conf from CRUX! Syntax was basically: (service1, service2, etc), correct? BSD style init, very simple. The new systemd seems easy enough but my admins at work hate it. I have never administered large numbers of Linux boxes so can't speak to what systemd does, or doesn't do, for them.

Yeah, it was quite similar. I haven't used CRUX myself, so I don't know how much alike they were.

Well, I am not a fan of systemd either wink. But let's not derail the thread with systemd discussion. It tends to get quite animated.
