Looking for networking suggestions

Probably best if I kick off with an overview of my usage - this is my work laptop and as such it is switched around between different wireless/wired networks during the course of the day. Also, I use it for out-of-hours support (when I'm rota-d on) and this can often be from any handy wifi network in range if I'm out and about. Basically, ease of use is important.

What I'd like to achieve is some kind of network management which cooperates better with kvm's networking than networkmanager. I currently use networkmanager but this is no use when I want to have guest VMs accessible via SSH/HTTP etc.

I've looked at systemd-networkd and I like the simplicity, but it doesn't beat having a tray icon for ease of use. I'm not afraid to use CLI-only programs, but in this instance I'd rather something pointy-clicky, if such a middle ground exists?
