XFCE4 volume keys and volume changing notification not working

I have just install xfce4 using 'xfce4' and 'xfce4-goodies'. I have followed the sound and xfce4 guide. I just cannot figure out how to get the media keys to work. I have installed:
- alsa-utils
- xfce4-volumed
- xfce4-notifyd
- pulseaudio-alsa

I wanted to see if the volume keys work in another desktop environment so I installed gnome to see if it worked and it does. I don't like gnome and would prefer to use

I tried that, but that didn't work.

Do you have xfce4-mixer installed?

I do, this didn't make a difference. What is xfce4-mixer for?

You tried what?  I gave you a link to a section of the wiki that gives three options depending on your configuration.  Which configuration are you using?  Which option did you try?  What does "didn't work" mean?  Were there errors?

Re: XFCE4 volume keys and volume changing notification not working

I fixed it. I had to go through the documentation about 10 times before I understood what I had to do.

And what did you have to do?  How did you fix it?

Please describe your solution as described here and edit the first post to prepend "[SOLVED]" to the title as described here.
