I have just install xfce4 using 'xfce4' and 'xfce4-goodies'. I have followed the sound and xfce4 guide. I just cannot figure out how to get the media keys to work. I have installed:
- alsa-utils
- xfce4-volumed
- xfce4-notifyd
- pulseaudio-alsa
I wanted to see if the volume keys work in another desktop environment so I installed gnome to see if it worked and it does. I don't like gnome and would prefer to use

You tried what? I gave you a link to a section of the wiki that gives three options depending on your configuration. Which configuration are you using? Which option did you try? What does "didn't work" mean? Were there errors?

I fixed it. I had to go through the documentation about 10 times before I understood what I had to do.
