The bottom part of my laptop screen is completely black after I log in (but not before; I'm using SDDM as my log-in manager with plasma 5.6.4, Qt 5.6.0, Frameworks 5.21, kernel 4.5.4-1 ARCH). About an inch off the bottom of my screen is completely blacked out.
1. The system knows there is an area there. Whenever I maximize a window, it uses that portion of the screen, but I cannot see anything since it's just a black rectangle.
2. My screen also happens to be a touchscreen, and when I touch that area, it takes me to the corresponding area that is not blacked out.
3. When I connect an external monitor (using HDMI), the entire laptop screen becomes usable again and the black part is filled with the rest of the screen.
4. I don't know if this is related, but this coincided with me being unable to adjust the brightness (I could do it before).
Does anyone have an idea how to debug this? Thanks!

Graphics card? Driver? Xorg log?

What driver(s) have you got installed for that card: names and numbers, please.
Look for errors in the log.

There was only one error in the file, which seems to have to do with video. I tried to provide as much context as possible.

No. What video drivers did you install? Names and versions:
https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/In … stallation
And post full logs, truncated versions are useless: https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=57855

Sorry about that. So, this problem has gone away. It was really odd
1. I connected via HDMI adapter an external monitor
2. I disconnected the VGA part from the monitor, but not the adapter. The laptop display settings showed two monitors. Display was still OK.
3. Rebooted. Disconnected HDMI. Now screen is working OK and display settings only shows laptop monitor.
No idea what happened. Here's a pastebin of my Xorg.log for my current session (working display): http://pastebin.com/SczBBy79
I have xf86-video-intel 1:2.99.917+645+g88733a7-1, xf86-video-vesa 2.3.4-2, lib32-mesa 11.2.2-1, mesa 11.2.2-1, mesa-libgl 11.2.2-1, lib32-mesa 11.2.2-1, lib32-mesa-libgl 11.2.2-1
Anyway, thank you for patient. I realize I was slow to answer. I appreciate the help!

It was probably the update to xf86-video-intel that resolved your issue.

The problem came back so this is definitely not the case. The bottom of my screen is dark again and again I can't adjust brightness. This is my Xorg.log: http://pastebin.com/MrkAK793
Again, the drivers I installed were: xf86-video-intel 1:2.99.917+645+g88733a7-1, xf86-video-vesa 2.3.4-2, lib32-mesa 11.2.2-1, mesa 11.2.2-1, mesa-libgl 11.2.2-1, lib32-mesa 11.2.2-1, lib32-mesa-libgl 11.2.2-1
Even if I connect it to a powered off monitor, the laptop thinks it's connected and the screen is full again. Anyway, any other ideas? Thanks!

Apparently connecting an adapter that is not connected ti anything also "fixes" it, but that is a rather cumbersome "solution." I do appreciate any other ideas on debugging this?

Can you change/check the screen resolution using xrandr? The only other thing I can think of in regards to position of the screen is an OSD on the monitor itself. In which case you would mash buttons on your monitor to position the screen correctly. It may also be possible to do this with xrandr.
