KDE black screen after sddm login

Hello everyone,

I recently bought a UHD monitor and had been messing around with the nvidia-settings application to change monitor layout, refresh rate, etc and everything was just fine, including playing games in X with playonlinux. I know the current settings work, because they had been working for quite some time before this started. The other day, and for seemingly no reason, after booting up I am able to login as the topic says but after that KDE presents me with a black screen. One of my monitors is a TV that is routed through a receiver and the receiver is getting no signal at all from the computer so I know it isn't an out of range issue. I have tried re-running, redetecting, and even manually reconfiguring and removing my xorg.conf to no avail. This one has me stumped, which annoys me because I really prefer to solve my own issues; it's the only way I learn.

My xorg.conf:

Re: KDE black screen after sddm login

That log is from the 8th of June, and shows that X exited successfully. Is this the right log?

Also, have you updated recently? Are you experiencing the same problem as described here?

Re: KDE black screen after sddm login

Thanks for responding,

I went to double check that that was the correct log and verified the /var/log/Xorg.0.log date and it was indeed from tonight. I decided to try

sudo systemctl start sddm.service

again and make a new one just the same. After sddm loaded I logged in, the screen went black (it's like X is running in the background but not being output to either of my monitors) and I ctrl-alt-f2'd back out to check the log file. It again says the 8th but had a 6/20 at 5:19am time so it has to be the one I just made. Here is the new one:

As to your other questions: I hadn't updated in a week or so but did update today after this started happening as a measure to fix the problem. I found that other post too, but it sounds like that guy is at least getting a mouse cursor and possibly task bar, can't tell exactly from his wording but it doesn't appear to be the same issue. For me it really seems X is actively running in the background, just not output to my displays.

Re: KDE black screen after sddm login

It appears there are issues with loading some modules in your latest log. What does your /etc/X11/xorg.conf look like?

Re: KDE black screen after sddm login

@parabola90 from post #3 in this thread

[ 169.374] (==) No Layout section. Using the first Screen section.
[ 169.374] (==) No screen section available. Using defaults.

Does not seem to match the xorg.conf you posted in post #1 and #5 which has both a ServerLayout" and  "Screen" section.

@numb3rz Do you mean these lines from post #3?

These seem typical of autodetection when no xorg.conf is in use and the packages xf86-video-nouveau, xf86-video-nv, xf86-video-fbdev, xf86-video-vesa are not installed.

Re: KDE black screen after sddm login

I ran the xorg.conf from post 1 and post 5 through a comparison just to be sure and they seem identical except for the 2 empty lines at the end of the file. They do seem to have both a ServerLayout and Screen section but I didn't know this was a problem, as the nvidia-settings program generated this file to begin with and it had been functioning this way for a few weeks.

Re: KDE black screen after sddm login

Update:

After sddm starts, if I login as root instead of my user account I am presented with a desktop and everything works fine. Log in as my user account and I get no video signal.
