Series router configuration

I know this forum is generally Arch-specific, but I have a general networking question.  I hope I can ask it here.

I have a garbage modem/router combo from my ISP that I hate (100 Mbps ethernet + b/g wireless).  I'm trying to install another router in a WAN configuration so that I can use the good one as my primary router and forget about the garbage one.

Anticipated config:

[Internet] ------ WAN Port [Modem] LAN port ---------- WAN port [Router] Lan port ------- [Computer]

Garbage Modem/Router combo settings:

WAN:
\- Automatic
LAN:
\- Static IP: 192.168.1.1
\- Subnet: 255.255.255.0
DCHP: Disabled
DMZ forwarded to 192.168.1.2

New router settings:

WAN:
\- Static IP: 192.168.1.2
\- Gateway: 192.168.1.1
\- Subnet: 255.255.255.0
LAN:
\- Static IP: 192.168.2.1
\- Subnet: 255.255.255.0
DHCP: Enabled

I thought this would work.  I can connect to the new router from my new LAN, but not the old one and not the internet.  I assumed that since any Tx packets are outside of the subnet, the new router will forward packets to the gateway on the other side (WAN).  Rx packets should automatically get forwarded from the old router to the new one as it's in the DMZ.

Any thoughts would help!

Re: Series router configuration

Google "router/repeater"

No need to "jump through hoops" with your OS. Simply configure your routers. Their respective set-up guides and c/s forums should also be a source of info that will help. Once you've chosen the network type and configured the architecture, it's simply a matter of selecting the node from your network manager. DHCP will do the rest (unless you really like abuse and would prefer a dedicated IP- to each his own).
