Wifi networks seem to block access to my home VPN... ideas [solved]

I have OpenVPN running and have been enjoying the private connection when on public wifi sources.  What I'm finding is that some public wifi sources are actively blocking my connections.  I have tried running the server on a non-standard port using both tcp and udp but still, I am unable to access.  I am assuming there is nothing to be done if they are squashing these types of packets or traffic on non-standard ports, etc.  Any ideas for me to try to enable my secure tunnel?  Thanks.

...I can get out on 443/tcp so perhaps it's feasible to reconfigure openvpn to run at that port/protocol.  I'll give it a whirl and report back.

Yes, I can confirm now in several cases this particular setup works well.  Wiki updated.
