ProLaint DL380 G6; rDNS takes >1 second.

I have an HP ProLiant DL380 G6 server, featuring the four "Broadcom Corporation NetXtreme II BCM5709 Gigabit Ethernet" NICs, which have a TOE.  I have BIND installed for DNS forwarding/caching.  It serves as NAT gateway and DNS server for a small subnet.  DNS resolution is wicked fast, as you would expect, but on that system, rDNS used by ping can take upwards of 1 second.  On the other hand, host and dig resolve rDNS queries almost instantly.  What's more confusing is that the other systems that use my ProLiant for DNS also resolve rDNS very quickly (ping or otherwise).  I'm concerned this may be hurting my performance, and very confused as to why this is happening.  Any insight would be helpful.

I've tried it without bind, ipv4 only, ipv6 only, reinstalling iputils, and turning all TOE off.  Nothing seems to work.
