So you got the cash what laptop would you buy?

Dual core ?

huge hard drive ?

large screen ?

twin graf cards ?

Alienware maybe....

Or should I buy a ibook ?

thoughts please (clean ones!!!!)

I would buy a mac laptop, one of the ones with x86 cores (powerbook duo?), and I would run linux on it.

Those laptops are all kinds of sweetness, hardware wise.

Either that, or I would buy a linovo (used to be ibm). Thinkpads are still pretty good, if you can deal with the nipple (I don't like nipples as a pointing device).

I'm planning on buying a Dell (Intel Core Duo) some time in the future... they are the best priced over here and they look quite nice. Also they give some options to the hardware selection. On the negative side, they bundle windows xp with them, there is no option to not have it, and there is no processor company choice, you have to stick with Intel.. but the Core Duo (until Core 2 Duo is released in the next couple months) its the best 32bit cpu out there, so...

I used to think Macs where cool, but i have been reading some info regarding Apple's behavior and, well, they opened my eyes and i don't think supporting them is such a good idea. But that's my personal opinion and nothing else.

Well, it kinda depends on what you want it for. If you want a desktop replacement then sure, you want big everything.

I personally like to be a little more mobile, so I need to consider size, weight and battery life. If I were buying right now, I think I'd go along with Cactus and look at an Intel Mac laptop.

this cheap lappy I got 256mb 40gb wlan Intel Celeron etc... but could do with 64bit ....

O & I need to run Arch on it ;-)

Asus has made some very nice laptops lately. I have a W5A, and I'm very happy with it. The built in webcamera doesn't work yet, but we're having a project for making a driver, and it'll soon get there, I think.

The nice thing with Asus, is that they like to give you more than you expect. I was surprised when I opened my case, and I got a wireless optical mouse, and the laptop have a built-in receiver. It's almost a shame the touchpad works so well that I rarely use the mouse. And there was an extra battery included as well.
By the way, I'm not an Asus salesperson. I'm just happy with mine

It might also help to tell you what NOT to buy:

Acer has much problems with running linux. I had to recompile kernels (or use -beyond for arch) to get all my devices working (IRQ problems -> buggy acpi bios! had to overwrite it using custom dsdt tables)

My old IBM Thinkpad used to work pretty well with Linux though. But expensive and an ugly design imho.

By the way, IBM Thinkpads were already created by Lenovo, but now it has really become separate.

Buy a red one! Red laptops are ssssoooooo coool 8) Colour is the most important thing. Nothing else matters. Ignore all other advices :-)

Acer's got shit build quality, leave it.

Go for dual core... having a dual core system just totally rocks. I <3>1 gfx card, linux SLI support sucks, and SLI hasnt really been shown to make any substantial improvments - yet.

dependin on where you live, HP put out some nice desktop replacment laptops, and their support is awesome in australia, but apparently complete shit in the US.

I'd go for the macbook pro

I like the Macbook pro too. Looks really sleek. And is very fast!
...Also very expensive near $3000

I know someone who works at Apple and he says the quality isn't as good as they make you believe. It breaks just as fast as any other laptop and Apple's support is very bad.

I would go with a Turion X2 dualcore as long as Intel disables the EM64T in their CoreDuo cpus.

I would also focus on getting a metallic case(lenovo) and a 7200 rpm hard disk. On the other side those Apple books look really sweet.

latest macbooks are x86, linux will run on them. two acer travelmates in this house, both bought over the last two years, both have had numerous stupid build issues and a handfull of hardware issues too. just ignore acer, they're crap.

Works perfectly fine for me.
And I did quite a lot of Google-work before buying this piece. General consensus was that Acer and Linux do a smooth job together ...

Some models just "work", other models (like the acer aspire 1694wlmi) don't work at all, unless you reroute alot of the IRQ's etc.

About the build quality... For some unknown reason, the dvdrw drive is jammed somewhere in my laptop, making it act all woozy (err, cant really explain) but it's not in the right place anymore.. And it seems like I have to get the laptop apart if I want to fix it.

Alot of people I know use Acer, and they have all experienced alot of hardware trouble.

My Acer laptop is broken now too (after a good 8 months)
But thats probably my own fault,
because I accidently spilled Sprite on it
