[SOLVED] Can Dota 2 be downloaded to a separate NTFS partition?

I've been trying to download (install) Dota 2 for the first time on my 1 TB HDD, but each time (I've tried three times) it would fail near the end, saying that the download is corrupt. Following several suggestions online, I've tried verifying the game cache (it just says it's okay each time), deleting the appmanifest_570.acm file, and trying a different download region (from Philippines to Singapore).

Here are the logs from ~/.local/share/Steam/logs: content_log.previous.txt content_log.txt
At around lines 600-700 the logs show "Corrupt staging file, first corrupt chunk at 0, total 1 (Read Error)".

Then later on I found out that it may be because it may be incompatible with NTFS, as discussed here and here, from 2014.

The drive is NTFS as I used it for dual-booting with Windows. (Though now I've decided to just stick with Arch, but I still have my files there so I can't just reformat it.) Here's my fstab:

#
# /etc/fstab: static file system information
#
# <file system>	<dir>	<type>	<options>	<dump>	<pass>
# /dev/sdb2
UUID=db650224-b6ee-412f-aeec-d9bc80b6fb1a	/         	ext4      	rw,relatime,data=ordered	0 1

# /dev/sdb1
UUID=6A49-687E      	/boot     	vfat      	rw,relatime,fmask=0022,dmask=0022,codepage=437,iocharset=iso8859-1,shortname=mixed,errors=remount-ro	0 2

/dev/sda1		/data		ntfs-3g		defaults	0 0

So, should I try to make a separate ext partition? Should I consider installing/downloading it on my 250 GB SSD instead (concern here is the lifespan of the SSD; Dota 2 is 7.0 GB and updates frequently)? Should I try out Wine?

Thanks.

Hi,

in the first link that you found is mentioned that the bug should be fixed in current beta client of steam. Did you tried to subscribe the beta client?
Im just asking because you did no write that you subscribed the steam beta.

For me dota works fine with linux, so there should be no reason to switch to wine/windows version.
If it does not work with the beta steam version i would shrink your HDD (the ntfs partition) and create a small (maybe 10-15GB) ext partition.

Re: [SOLVED] Can Dota 2 be downloaded to a separate NTFS partition?

Hello,

I don't think it's the beta version, I just downloaded 'steam' with pacman.

I've tried downloading it on the SSD (ext4) already, and it seemed to work, but now I'm concerned about its lifespan. Should I actually be still concerned about this and move it to the HDD, or do I trust its "durability"?  I'm using a Samsung 250 GB 850 EVO, rated at 75 TBW.

Thanks.

Re: [SOLVED] Can Dota 2 be downloaded to a separate NTFS partition?

The SSD lifespan story is FUD in the majority of user scenarios. PC gamers have been installing their games on SSD's for years and doing so was one of the reasons SSD's became popular beyond the high end segment. Playing popular games will not kill your SSD any faster than whatever else you might have in mind to do with it. Most of the SSD pants wetting comes from the days of cheap flash drives being sold as "SSD" in the early days of "netbooks". I probably wouldn't put the swap partition of a high traffic server on an SSD, if you don't need the performance, but that's it.

Even if the game updated 100% every day for a year, that would only expend 3.4% of the drive's rated TBW.

Also, if you're interested you can use the raw value of the SMART attribute 'Total LBAs Written' to calculate TBW:

('Total LBAs Written' * 512) / (1024^4)

You have to subscribe the beta updates in steam.
