Login Service fails to start

OK, here goes.   You guys are BRUTAL on newbies but I've worked on this for hours and now risk the wrath of the Arch "Overlords" for asking a stupid question:

Base facts:
1) new to Arch
2) been around the Linux world a while but not a wizard by a long shot
3) I have run MANY searches on this forum and cannot find a similar problem begin described
4) I have read ALL of the Rules and Guidelines and I believe I have followed them all before I ask this question.   If the Arch Gods believe I have made an error in this regard please be specific about which rule I failed to follow rather than just pointing me back at the rules link.
5) I have carefully read and I believe I have followed the installation instructions meticulously
6) using archlinux-2017.01.01-dual.iso dowloaded today
7) using EFI Boot.
8) have confirmed that VMWare machine is configured to support this
9) confirmed that all EFI variables are accessible during installation
10) 20 GB disk, 2 partitions /dev/sda1 is boot partition mounted at /boot,  /dev/sda2 is root partition created with gdisk
11) Host machine running Windows 8.1, Core i7 CPU, 32GB RAM
12) VMWare Workstation 11
13) Basic base level configuration using "pacstrap /mnt base" as shown in installation instructions - no additional modules or other SW installed
14) Boot process seems to go well but eventually hangs, and then fails

in order to get to the journal files I had to reboot using the iso image, mount root partition to /mnt and run journalctl -D /mnt/var/log/journal.

Below are a set of snippets from the output that I think might provide someone who been around the block with Arch a few more times than me a clue as to where to look for this problem:

Did you really intend for your username to be your email address?

Re: Login Service fails to start

These days I use email as username wherever possible because I can't keep track of all the usernames on all my accounts and my account management system "LastPass" is still flaky enough that there a good chance it won't remember properly either.

But I digress - sorry.

Thanks for the info on Arch on hypervisor.!!!

Strangely enough, this morning the system boots fine.   Network not working yet I'll get to that later.   Mixed feelings.   In my experience things that magically start working by themselves will ultimately magically stop working by themselves.

Here is nopaste of journalctl https://nopaste.me/view/83e0e7c7
