[SOLVED] WiFi connection breaks after upgrading to linux 4.9.6-1

I ran pacman -Syu today, and upgraded to the kernel version 4.9.6-1. After restarting, I cannot connect to the internet. I am unable to search for any WiFi access points.

My network controller listed with lspci -k is
Realtek Semiconductor Co,. Ltd. RTL8192CE PCIe Wireless Network Adapter (rev 01)
Subsystem: ASUSTeK Computer Inc. Device 85e3
Kernel driver in use: rtl8192ce
Kernel modules: rtl8192ce

The output of iw dev wlp3s0 link is:
Not connected.

When I run iw dev wlp3s0 scan | less, I get the message
"command failed: Device or resource busy (-16)"

How are you attempting to connect?

Please post the output of:

systemctl list-unit-files --state=enabled

Re: [SOLVED] WiFi connection breaks after upgrading to linux 4.9.6-1

Restarting did the trick. Anyway, here's the output of systemctl list-unit-files --state=enabled:

UNIT FILE STATE
autovt@.service enabled
clamd.service enabled
freshclamd.service enabled
getty@.service enabled
iptables.service enabled
netctl@wlp3s0\x2dHOME\x2d1697\x2d2.4.service enabled
ntpd.service enabled
tor.service enabled
remote-fs.target enabled

9 unit files listed.

A while later I came back to my computer and once again, the connection is down. iw dev wlp3s0 scan | less just gives me a blank screen with (END). At this point I am guessing that this is a problem with my ISP or router.

Update: I do have a connection now but it seems to be intermittent.

2nd Update: I lost my connection very soon after booting up and I don't know what to do.

Re: [SOLVED] WiFi connection breaks after upgrading to linux 4.9.6-1

OK, so I've tried stopping the clamd, freshclamd, netctl@wlp3s0\x2dHOME\x2d1697\x2d2.4, ntpd, and tor services. Nothing different happened when I searched for APs.

I decided to try using wpa_supplicant, and I followed the wiki example.conf. This is what happened:

$ wpa_supplicant -B -i wlp3s0 -c /etc/wpa_supplicant/example.conf
Successfully initialized wpa_supplicant
nl80211: deinit ifname=wlp3s0 disabled_11b_rates=0
wlp3s0: Failed to initialize driver interface

Re: [SOLVED] WiFi connection breaks after upgrading to linux 4.9.6-1

What is strange, is that after booting up, I can access (about) one web page on Firefox before the connection drops. After running journalctl -xe, I can see repeating messages of "carrier lost".

EDIT: I do see that I have a connection with

sudo iw dev wlp3s0 link

so far. I'm yet unable to connect to or ping a website.

Re: [SOLVED] WiFi connection breaks after upgrading to linux 4.9.6-1

I have tried running

wpa_supplicant -D nl80211,wext -i wlp3s0 -c <(wpa_passphrase "<ssid>" "<passphrase>")

and it keeps trying to authenticate, but it fails. I'm pretty sure that I put in the correct passphrase.

EDIT: That was because I was trying to run it with sudo. I got a successful connection with wpa_supplicant, but when I tried to ping a website, journalctl kept spamming

wlp3s0: fe80:68ee:96ff:fed9:169a is unreachable, expiring it

along with two occurrances of

wlp3s0: fe80:68ee:96ff:fed9:169a is reachable again

I can't even ping my router.

Re: [SOLVED] WiFi connection breaks after upgrading to linux 4.9.6-1

I went and deleted my netctl profile and recreated it. I was able to ping websites for a while, but there were problems with packet loss.

Checking the netctl status gives me "active (exited)". My guess as to what is happening, is that I have a bad connection to my router which is dropping every so often, and when it does, the netctl service exits. I'm not sure where to go from this. When I try to restart netctl, I get the "WPA association/authentication failed" error.

Re: [SOLVED] WiFi connection breaks after upgrading to linux 4.9.6-1

I am experiencing the EXACT same problem.

Lenovo E425 Laptop

Kernel 4.9.7-1-ARCH
Network controller: Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd. RTL8188CE 802.11b/g/n WiFi Adapter (rev 01)
Subsystem: Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd. Device 8195
Kernel driver in use: rtl8192ce
Kernel modules: rtl8192ce

I also tried disabling ipv6 (ipv6.disable=1) from boot cmd just in case, same behavior. Your lucky to pop off one web page load. Sometimes networkmanager will cycle, disconnecting and re-initializing the wifi connection, sometimes it does not. Its really an odd one.

My systemctl list-unit-files --state=enabled output

org.cups.cupsd.path enabled

I see a bug report that looks like our symptom, even mentions our realtek wifi card model. Just have to hold tight or downgrade kernel.

I've got the same problem.  Downgrading the kernel fixed the issue for me.  Hopefully, it will be patched soon.

Re: [SOLVED] WiFi connection breaks after upgrading to linux 4.9.6-1

Hey,

i have a similar problem with my wifi.

Ouput of lspci:

Network controller: Qualcomm Atheros AR9485 Wirless Network Adapter (rev 01).

With the latest kernel wifi is almost completely broken.
With linux-4.8.14-1 wifi connection is okay-ish at home but still very bad at university. Sometimes, I can't even scan for networks via wifi-menu and if it works I find only few networks. It is very difficult to connect to a network and if I am able to connect the signal is very poor and the connection does not last for long.
I use netctl(-auto) to manage my connections.

Here is some output from dmesg:

Re: [SOLVED] WiFi connection breaks after upgrading to linux 4.9.6-1

I downgraded to 4.8.13-1 to achieve acceptable wifi performance. Kernel 4.9.8 is dropping soon, its has a lot of networking changes, hopefully solves this.

Re: [SOLVED] WiFi connection breaks after upgrading to linux 4.9.6-1

Its a driver issue, solved with 4.9.8-1 and installing rtlwifi_new-dkms (currently 225.ad9a9f2-1) from AUR. Remember to install linux-headers first so dkms can install module.

Re: [SOLVED] WiFi connection breaks after upgrading to linux 4.9.6-1

In my case, linux-4.8.8-2 was worst than linux-4.8.14-1. But linux-4.9.8-1 seems to work for the moment.

[EDIT] I take it back, the problem still persists with linux-4.9.8-1.
