hostname not recognized when joining win2003 domain

at work there is a win2003 AD set up.  the DHCP server is run on 2003.  on my ubuntu install, the hostname is "ubuntu", and when i use "ping ubuntu" on any computer on the network it responds.

how do i get this working with arch?  i can ping the IP address directly, not the hostname is not recognized.

thanks.

Re: hostname not recognized when joining win2003 domain

questions that need answering first.

1) Are you using WINS naming, or DNS naming?

2) Does your ubuntu box have a static ip, or does it get its ip via dhcp?
3) Does your arch box have a static ip, or does it get its ip via dhcp?

Re: hostname not recognized when joining win2003 domain

WINS vs DNS....no idea sad

both ubuntu and arch is using dhcp

i noticed in ubuntu there's a dhclient.conf file where it has a send hostname parameter.

this is contained in the package dhcp for arch.  the rc.d/network script uses dhcpcd, so i dunno...

Re: hostname not recognized when joining win2003 domain

Your Ubuntu machine is accessing the network via an IP address wich likely you obtain from the DHCP server but your machin is NOT part of the Windows domain, therefore its name is not known to windows.
If your server admin adds your IP address to the domain (which I doubt if they are into Windows) then you can  ping your system by name, otherwise just use your IP.

Re: hostname not recognized when joining win2003 domain

the linux server on our network has a assigned ip address of 192.168.100.30.

at first i put arch on there because it's what i'm comfortable with.  but i put my selfishness aside and replaced it with ubuntu dapper (for the 5 year official server support) because it's for my work, not for me.

anyways, originally the win2k3 set up the hostname of the linux server as "archlinux".  we couldn't ping it with a computer on the network using the name (ip address worked fine).

then when i put ubuntu on the same server, the hostname worked.  on the win2k3 server the linux box is still configured as archlinux. however, when the ubuntu box uses dhcp to acquire an ip address, it responds to "ping ubuntu" from any box on the network.

Re: hostname not recognized when joining win2003 domain

yeah. because ubuntu sends its hostname as part of the dhcp request, so the dhcp server, registers it in dns. Hence the ubuntu box has name resolution for it.

I am pretty sure arch does this too. In /etc/conf.d/dhcpcd, you will find that the syntax is correct. "-h $HOSTNAME"

1) either have arch use dhcp, or
2) configure your dns entry correctly

Re: hostname not recognized when joining win2003 domain

my /etc/conf.d/dhcpcd has the "-h $HOSTNAME" in there....i don't think it actually sends the hostname, and is more of a local machine thing, but i'm just guessin here.

Re: hostname not recognized when joining win2003 domain

Windows Server 2003 uses DNS and not WINS to resolve hostnames.

DNS is even a dependency of the domain controller...

yes, but you can run a wins server that ties in to the active directory domain, and have network clients resolve against that as well, for short names.

Re: hostname not recognized when joining win2003 domain

fixed the problem.
i created a network profile.

HOSTNAME=FQDN
DOMAIN=MY_WORK_DOMAIN
IFOPTS="dhcp"

voila!
