Sporadic hang instead of suspend

Hello,

I have a Vaio Pro 13 running Arch happily since I got it.

Sometime last year I started having this issue, where the machine will suspend/resume a few times ok, but after some use it will hang with screen off instead of suspending properly. I am then forced to do a hard poweroff.

When the issue started, I could not figure out the source, but it went away when I switched to linux-lts. I assumed it was a temporary thing that got changed in the upstream kernel and it would eventually get fixed. After today's update, the issue finally started with linux-lts too.

After reboot, the last line of

journalctl -b -1

is

Mar 08 14:56:39 jilet systemd-sleep[3921]: Suspending system...

There are no errors on sight, so I do not know how to debug this.

I am not quite the newbie, common sense tells me to track down what was changed in linux-lts recently but I have gotten away with not going in this deep until now and do not know where to begin.

Any input is appreciated.

Re: Sporadic hang instead of suspend

same here after upgrading mesa yesterday (maybe should have rebooted after the upgrade before suspending pc)

Mar 12 00:33:46 arch-bill systemd[1]: Reached target Sleep.
Mar 12 00:33:46 arch-bill systemd[1]: Starting Suspend...
Mar 12 00:33:46 arch-bill systemd-sleep[22344]: Suspending system...

Mar 12 08:27:02 arch-bill kernel: Linux version 4.10.1-1-ARCH (builduser@heftig-13232) (gcc version 6.3.1 20170109 (GCC) ) #1 SMP PREEMPT Sun Feb 26 21:08:53 UTC 2017

there should be a lot more lines after "Suspending system..." and before Reboot. No problems with suspend in 4.9.11

EDIT: Syu to 4.10.2-1-ARCH without changing anything and suspended normal and resumed normal. Not sure if the latest kernel solves suspend issue as I see others have it work sometimes and sometimes not in the previous stable. It worked the first two times after previous update to 4.10.1-1 so I thought problem started with mesa update.

Re: Sporadic hang instead of suspend

Hello,

I realized the same issue since the lts-kernel switched to Linux 4.9. After downgrading back again to the latest cached 4.4 version it is working well again.

So since the linux-lts kernel is using the 4.9.14 right now and WFV says 4.9.11 works well, the problem is maybe in a change between this to versions...

I am using a Thinkpad x220.

Re: Sporadic hang instead of suspend

Anything new here? Or are you still working with old kernel?

Re: Sporadic hang instead of suspend

I am currently using 4.10.6-1-zen and have not experienced the issue in a while. Hopefully this does not jinx it. I am on a pretty tight schedule these days and do not really feel like messing with it. I keep an old lts kernel package handy just in case I need to revert in a pinch.

Re: Sporadic hang instead of suspend

Thanks for your reply muz!
Since yesterday I am using the newest Arch-Kernel (4.10.8-1-ARCH). I will report any incident here. Maybe we are lucky and it is actually solved in the newer versions...

Re: Sporadic hang instead of suspend

I've had this issue on my retired PC as well as my currently main X220 (see sig), so it at least doesn't seem to be specific to certain hardware. I'm suspending a few times a day, but I haven't had the time to use my laptop much, so maybe that's why it feels like it doesn't happen as often on the X220. I can't exactly pinpoint when this started happening on my old PC, but it was definitely last year.

Re: Sporadic hang instead of suspend

I'm also experiencing this since a about a month or so. (I can't go digging in logs at the moment)

I am on 4.9.21-1-lts at the moment. I'm going to try linux 4.10.8-1 today (on my dell E7450 laptop).

Re: Sporadic hang instead of suspend

Hello

I got another hang on the new kernel. I had the backlight off option switched on in my xscreensaver config and will try now without it. Has anybody maybe the same configuration? It appears to me that the system is still working, but just the backlight is still off so that the system only seems to hang.

Greetings
techge

PS: @loqs sorry, I didn't meant to post this link in this way, it should be just the bug report, not the voting...

EDIT: minor change...

Re: Sporadic hang instead of suspend

Hello,

sorry for posting again. I could reproduce the problem. At least the hangs *I* have after suspend. If I am turning off the backlight with 'xset dpms force off' and suspend, the screen keeps black after resuming. The command is probably the same thing, xscreensaver is using.

I do not know, if we all have the same issue, but it seems to be mine... Any idea, what to do next, beside turning off the backlight-off-function of xscreensaver? I mean... to solve the problem in the kernel? Or maybe it is still a configuration issue of my system?

Greetings
techge

Re: Sporadic hang instead of suspend

I have the same problem since about one month, both with lts and not lts kernels (now I'm using 4.10.10-1-ARCH ).
The power button light goes on, the fan starts, but the screen is black and the system does not respond (alt+stamp+REISUB does not work) and I can only turn it off pressing the power button.
It does not happen every time I suspend.

I'm still learning English so please excuse me if my English is not good enough and feel free to correct me via PM if you want.

Can you ping the box?  Can you log into the box via ssh?
