Re: Laptops which run Arch

I am planning to buy Samsung NP RV509-A09, which is cost effective. Has somebody loaded Arch 64 on this? Will this support Linux? Pl. comment

The Asus EEE-PC 1015PX runs Arch with a little bit of configuration, I am working on a Wiki page to simplify the process for other users.

Re: Laptops which run Arch

I'm using a Lenovo ThinkPad X61 with Arch Linux since May 2011. The original purpose was testing Gnome3. This notebook runs very good with Arch so far. I like that distro big_smile.
Additionally, I'm using tp_fancontrol to reduce the fan noise on the ThinkPad.

Re: Laptops which run Arch

HP Probook 6360b

All is fine (except for external screen, but that's rather a Gnome3 thing than a HP one, imho).

Just have to install Arch with an unofficial ISO as the official one is prehistorical (2010.05, a year...)  and doesn't recognize some of its hardware.

Re: Laptops which run Arch

Lenovo 3000 C200

CPU: Intel Core 2 Duo T5500 (1,66 GHz)
Screen: 15" 1024x768
WLAN: Intel Pro/Wireless 3945ABG
Video: Intel 945G Express Chipset with 128MB

This one works out of the box. Didn't have any kind of problem. It's even perfect with GNOME 3. And it also works great with Ubuntu 10.10 (haven't tested other distros).

Acer Aspire 7741G-6426

CPU: Intel Core i5 480M (2,66 GHz)
Screen: 17.3" 1600x900
WLAN: Atheros AR9287
Video: AMD Radeon HD 6550M with 1GB dedicated memory

Everything works great. Only had two problems: The open source driver for the graphics card, which made the laptop very hot and had a distorted screen (which lasted only a few seconds) just before the WM/DE loaded (but everything else was fine, no video problems whatsoever). With the Catalyst driver the temp it's normal and there's no distorted screen at boot, only that it's not great with GNOME 3 (the top panel it's weird, for example).

With XFCE it's great. As a window manager I use SLIM and I noticed something (I don't know if this happens to anyone else): Before I enabled the autologin, closing the lid of my laptop to suspend worked fine, the problem was to resume. It only showed me a black screen and I had to hard shutdown the PC, nothing I tried to fix that worked (this only happened if I suspended closing the lid, through the terminal or pressing the power button was normal). And also, I couldn't -permanently- set the brightness of the screen, no matter what, at boot it was always at 100%. Once I enabled autologin (because I like it that way, I didn't know it would 'fix' anything) both things were 'fixed'!

And second, at first I used netcfg to manage my wireless connection but sometimes it failed to connect me at boot (and I added the net profile and everything was right. With the Lenovo that's not an issue). But I'm using Wicd now and it's perfect.

Update: I just installed KDE and it works great, at least as far as I can see. But with autologin disable, I can't resume from sleep mode (or suspend, 'suspen2ram'), it's the same thing that happened with XFCE4 and SLIM. I don't know what's the problem, for now it doesn't bother me since I always enable autologin (and with this enable, I can resume without problems), but when I have time, I'll try to find out what's the problem. And with KDE I can set the brightness without problems, too. smile

Update 2: About the suspend/resume issue, it's still a problem. With autologin enabled, (for me) doesn't happen always, but still happens.
More info: https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=121823

(About other distros - I don't know if I'm allowed to write about other distros, but it's just in case anyone is interested)
I also tested this one with OpenSUSE 11.2, 11.4, Ubuntu 10.10 and Ubuntu 11.04. With OpenSUSE 11.2 (KDE), as expected, there were some video issues, although I only tested this one through the LiveCD. With OpenSUSE 11.4 (GNOME), there was a black screen (or a distorted one, I really don't remember, the thing is that I had to hard reboot) and nothing else when I tried to install it or use the LiveCD, so I had to add "nomodeset" to the boot line, then edit the xorg.conf.d/50-device.conf file and uncomment the line #Driver "radeon". After that, It installed with no problems. Everything was fine, as far as I saw. I didn't keep it for too long.

With Ubuntu 10.10, everything worked out of the box, just a weird screen at boot, but once the desktop loaded, no problems. With Ubuntu 11.04 there was no problem at all.

Now, I haven't tested the Ethernet connection with either laptop, but I'm guessing if the wireless works, Ethernet should not be a problem.
Sorry for the long post, haha. And for my english! smile

Lenovo ThinkPad x220 tablet.

No problems, but a fair amount of work to get it to fully functional.

Touchscreen works, both capacitive (touch) and pen input. Xmonad on it.
