[solved][AMD][X.org]unable to start Xorg server & getting a crash

Hi here,

I did a new install of my archlinux, installed all i need, configured Xorg and all to use catalyst(AMD)

But when i doing startx with the kernel:

  • linux-lts 4.9: he crash

  • linux-ck-haswell 4.11: he crash

AMD was not abandonned GNU/linux too?

I use Archlinux as usual, that not changed since 6 years^^

i did the downgrade because the latest xorg is supposed to be not supported by Catalyst driver, that why i use the repo [xorg117] and catalyst

Sorry, but I can't read sense into this ;-)
AMD still supports linux, nowadays through the AMDGPU drivers. But they abandoned fglrx. The driver is no longer maintained nor developed (and was a PITA to begin with ;-)

Catalyst packages are no longer offered in the official repositories. It is no longer updated by AMD and does not support the latest Xorg, so installing an old Xorg is required.


I know that you downgraded "something" and installed "something", but "something" went wrong - you've an fglrx kernel module installed that doesn't match the xorg driver.
That's why you need to explain what *exactly* you installed & downgraded.

The overall question though remains why you're trying to use fglrx itfp.

AMD supports the radeon and amdgpu drivers. You've a volcanic island GPU, which is (supposed to be) fully supported by the AMDGPU driver, so try that one (first)

About performance: try. There is no other way, because it also depends on what you're doing with the card. As soon as you can click "Vulkan", you'll be better off w/ AMDGPU for quite sure.

I did a test with the AMDGPU drivers ingame, the result was very good, more like far better than the old deprecatied driver fglrx.
btw and ofc, the problem about X.org & my r9 280x is resolved.
