[Solved] Cannot scan for wireless networks

Hi.

Since last night, my device is unable to list any wireless networks.

'wifi-menu wlp3s0'

returns

<pre>Scanning for networks... nl80211: Could not set interface 'p2p-dev-wlp3s0' UP
p2p-dev-wlp3s0: Failed to initialize driver interface
failed
</pre>

'ip link' lists the interface as UP

 wlp3s0: <NO-CARRIER,BROADCAST,MULTICAST,UP>

After 'killall wpa_supplicant'
it is able to set the interface up, but still can't find any networks:

Scanning for networks... failed
No networks found

'iw dev wlp3s0 scan' returns

command failed: Connection timed out (-110)

Trying to connect using 'wpa_supplicant -B -i interface -c <(wpa_passphrase MYSSID passphrase)' returns

Successfully initialized wpa_supplicant
Failed to open config file '/dev/fd/63', error: No such file or directory
Failed to read or parse configuration '/dev/fd/63'.

I have so far been unable to find anyone in the forums with the same issue (similar ones, but not the same symptoms).
Does anyone have an idea how I could go at troubleshooting this?

Here are some recent log entries

Failed to read or parse configuration '/dev/fd/63'.

You need to run the entire command as root, that error is because of the failed redirection.

Try:

sudo bash -c 'wpa_supplicant -B -i interface -c <(wpa_passphrase MYSSID passphrase)'

Or create a static configuration file with wpa_passphrase beforehand and use wpa_supplicant's -c flag to read it.

EDIT: please also post the full output of:

systemctl list-unit-files --state=enabled

EDIT2: if your device is unable to scan then it may be broken, check from the "live" environment.

Re: [Solved] Cannot scan for wireless networks

I'm not sure about the rest, but the wpa_supplicant command failed because you shouldn't use process substitution like that.  See the big NOTE box in the wiki. (Personally I'd say don't use process substitution at all for troubleshooting of anything: it joins two distinct processes together hiding any output so you cannot break it down further to diagnose the problem.

In any case, I doubt wpa_supplicant would work even when called correctly.  To go further we should know about your hardware and driver(s) in use.  It looks like it's iwlwifi, but what is the wireless card?  Have you tried the troubleshooting steps here: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Wi … on#iwlwifi

Re: [Solved] Cannot scan for wireless networks

After 'killall wpa_supplicant'

systemctl list-unit-files --state=enabled
systemctl list-units | grep -iE '(net|dhcp|wpa|conn|wicd)'

The scan issue seems to be a problem with the latest firmware

Thanks for the hint. But the troubleshooting steps posted under iwlwifi don't appear to have anything to do with my problem. I think it's more likely due to an update, since it was working fine before.

Thanks for the link. That looks like the most likely cause. I guess I'll wait for a while and if the patch isn't applied soon, I'll roll back to the last version.

Re: [Solved] Cannot scan for wireless networks

You have more than one service competing for control of your networking. Disable and stop all of your networking services then try connecting again.

Also you can just move the newest firmware for your device away and see whether that makes a difference (that does NOT render slithery's remark void! - in order to reasonably run wifi-menu, you've to stop dhcpcd and NetworkManager* services)

I was using wifi-menu for troubleshooting and dhcpcd for the initial installation (had forgotten to disable it once NetworkManager was installed).
Normally, I use NetworkManager.

Reverting to the previous version of linux-firmware fixed the issue for now. So I guess I'll just have to keep an eye on the version number when updating.
Thanks for the help, everyone!
