[SOLVED] Gnome black screen with only cursor visible.

Hello,

I have been running gnome on my laptop for a while now when all of a sudden yesterday it crashes on me and boots me into gdm, when I try loging back into Gnome (either Xorg, Classic or Wayland) it shows up with a black screen where I can move my mouse but it won't take any keyboard input or display anything else. My i3wm still works, so does KDE and openbox. It is just gnome. I tired uninstalling gnome and gdm and reinstalling it with no luck. The exact same issue keeps happening.

I wondered if anyone could point me in a direction to solve this issue. Nothing seems to fail during the systemd-boot. So I am honestly clueless to where the issue is. The last thing I remember doing is installing simple screen recorder. That's when it booted me back into gdm.

Thanks in advance!

Start by providing sufficient information: https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=57855

There should something in logs when this happens.

Neither are useful.
systemd journal is the first place you should look for errors and system logs.

First, is this still an Arch Anywhere machine?
Second, what if you disable GDM and start your session with startx and a custom ~/.xinitrc ? At the crash, there may me useful information on the console

Re: [SOLVED] Gnome black screen with only cursor visible.

This was just a stock Arch install and while looking at my journal I found that a gnome extensions was causing the gnome-shell to not load. I removed the extensions folder and all of its contents then just created the extensions folder again and managed to boot into gnome again. Thanks for all of your help guys!

Marked as solved!
