Xorg freezes on amdgpu usage

Xorg freezes when running Firefox or Chromium with hardware acceleration, no keyboard, no screen update, no input responding and only mouse cursor can move.

It can be logged into by ssh remotely, dmesg and journalctl provided nothing special about the freezing, meanwhile the gpu temperature continues go high to reach the shutdown threshold.

The remote reboot/poweroff cmds do not take effects and I have to use the power button to shutdown it.

If using xterm or Chromium without hardware acceleration, Xorg does not freeze, as far as I see.

I guess the issue is due to the open source amdgpu driver, because Chromium without hardware acceleration is not going to use gpu process.

This issue occurs for both kernel 4.14 and 4.15.

Have you tried downgrading xorg to 1.19.6-2?

That's what I'm  trying right now, though I can not say for sure if this works since the bug is playing hide and seek with me.

Using DRI 2 has no effect and X freezes as usual.

Disabling glamer by setting AccelMethod none does not freeze X anymore, only the browser freezes.
The other porcesses can be launched and the frozen process can be terminated.
However, since the 2D acceleration is disabled, the display is lagged and cpu usage will be quite high.

It seems the glamor issue of Xorg.

I have similiar issue on the same hardware (AMD Opteron X3421 APU; Carrizo gpu). I can reproduce it by clicking on date in Gnome, or enabling terminal, webbrowser. I was able to reproduce issue on XFCE4 and also on Wayland only (using Weston) by starting chromium.

I am not pasting outputs of dmesg, Xorg.log, because they look the same. What do you think about line below. I see it in mine and cmos3511 dmesg output.

[drm:hwss_wait_for_blank_complete [amdgpu]] *ERROR* DC: failed to blank crtc!

I have tried with Fedora live CD (Linux kernel 4.13) and everything work fine, but after installation and upgrade to kernel (4.14). I had the same issue.

Now I have reinstalled Arch (base installation) once again and tried without any additional GPU packets (default amdgpu). Issue is the same. I have also tried also https://support.hpe.com/hpsc/doc/public … 21847en_us, but nothing changed.

This error occurs after the kernel 4.15, and not for  kernel 4.14.

BTW. Have you also enabled the iommu BIOS option, and added the iommu=pt kernel parameters?

Yes, I did enable it, but I checked it both ways and the issue is not related to iommu.

Hi jeroof, my kernel parameters are "amd_iommu=on iommu=pt amdgpu.dc=1", and actually only "iommu=pt" is needed for the latest kernel.

My kernel config is the arch default without any modifications.
