[SOLVED] Recent X crashes

Since Sat Feb 3, X has been extremely unreliable for me. It's crashing regularly several times a day. I'm using KDE Plasma and Nvidia drivers.

There is nothing in journalctl. I also checked /var/log/Xorg.0.log. There's not much, except the following lines.

[ 15.184] (WW) Open ACPI failed (/var/run/acpid.socket) (No such file or directory)

which seems to be unimportant. The following is also spammed.

[ 523.179] (WW) NVIDIA(0): Suspend swap group failed.
[ 523.180] (WW) NVIDIA(0): Resume swap group failed.
[ 523.182] (WW) NVIDIA(0): Suspend swap group failed.
[ 523.182] (WW) NVIDIA(0): Resume swap group failed.
[ 523.182] (WW) NVIDIA(0): Suspend swap group failed.
[ 523.182] (WW) NVIDIA(0): Resume swap group failed.

However, this only occurs after switching ttys. I'm also reasonably sure that I have had X crash before switching tty at all.

I've tried a few things, none of which have worked. I normally use linux/nvidia, so I tried the -lts version of both. X still crashed.

I also tried reverting to the following packages, which were updated just before the crashes started.

mesa-17.3.3-1
mesa-vdpau-17.3.3-1
libva-mesa-driver-17.3.3-1
xorg-server-common-1.19.6-2
xorg-server-1.19.6-2

I followed the wiki's Nvidia page, disabling RenderAccel in xorg.conf. However, after restarting, my framerate decreased to ~2 frames/sec.

I also tried using nopat as a kernel parameter, as per the wiki, but X wouldn't even start.

I tried changing the (KDE Plasma) rendering backend. I normally use XRender. I tried both OpenGL version, but both are extremely unstable, and cause kwin to crash every few seconds after switching ttys.

Finally, there are some errors in the startup (in journalctl), but I'm unsure how important these are.

Re: [SOLVED] Recent X crashes

Are you sure it's the server and not the session that crashes? (If you loose ksmserver, your session exits and you'll be back to login, many DMs will restart the X server for this)

Hmmm… yeah I guess I don't know that. Is there any way to tell?

Since there were no KDE/Plasma updates recently, it guessed other packages might have been to blame. In any case, I noticed that there was a KDE/Plasma update today, so if those packages are to blame, then it might fix it.

Re: [SOLVED] Recent X crashes

Check if you get any coredumps and look through your journal.

Thanks for the suggestions. So there's nothing in journalctl, but coredumpctl list lists dumps for /usr/bin/kactivitymanagerd whose timings appear to match with my crashes. I guess it's conceivable that this is symptom, not a cause, but it's somewhere to start. I then ran

# coredumpctl info /usr/bin/kactivitymanagerd

which had the following "Signal" line:

        Signal: 6 (ABRT)

I then examined the backtrace, but I didn't seem too informative.

Re: [SOLVED] Recent X crashes

kactivitymanager shouldn't kill the session, though - what is *actually* happen when you talk about "crash"?

Re: [SOLVED] Recent X crashes

I've been getting those "suspend / resume" warnings in xorg logs as well, but only after I resume from suspend or hibernate. I put up a post at the nvidia forums about it.. https://devtalk.nvidia.com/default/topi … ia-390-25/

Also, as I mentioned, there were no Plasma updates that triggered these crashes, although it's plausible that my config might have become corrupted. I could also try reverting my config from old backups.

Sorry, should have been clearer. I launch Plasma with startx. After crashing, I get kicked back to the console.

Yes, I suspect that this might be a red herring for my crashes.

I've just checked my old Xorg logs from my backups, and I only have one file with the suspend/resume warnings, from yesterday. I'm not sure how informative the timing of that is.

=EDIT=
And another massive KDE update hit just then, so that might also fix it potentially. If it even is KDE.

Re: [SOLVED] Recent X crashes

Assuming you "startkde" from xinitrc, tap gdb into ksmserver and Xorg (obviously from another VT ;-) and see which actually segfaults (though I think you should see indicators of an Xorg crash on the console)

I've tried to do this, but it's behaving really erratically for me.

Just to be explicit, I open another TTY, obtain the PID with pgrep ksmserver -l, then run

sudo gdb -p <PID>

I then type in backtrace. The problem is that plasmshell/kwin appears to wig out even more frequently than normal. I normally restart plasmashell in such cases, but for some reason it won't restart unless I end the gdb session. Also, having gdb open prevents things like dolphin from opening. As soon as I exit, dolphin starts.

I just had a crash, and I saw a spam of "Timers cannot be stopped from another thread". However, I immediately started X again, it crashed in 60 seconds, but this time there was nothing on the console.

Re: [SOLVED] Recent X crashes

gdb stops the pocess, you need to pass "continue", wait for the crash and then "bt"
See https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/De … _the_trace on details, notably thread backtracing and setting a gdb output file.

Re: [SOLVED] Recent X crashes

Thank you for the link. That makes sense. I used "continue", as you suggested. After the crash and "bt", there were a few lines with

... in ?? () from /usr/lib/libQt5Core.so.5

Here is a photo of the full output. (Apologies for the photo instead of text. I've since learnt how to get gdb to write to a file, so I'll post text next time.)

I rebuilt qt5-core with options=(debug !strip), then installed it. However, the next time it crashed and I ran "bt", it just said "No stack." (Here is the full output).

Re: [SOLVED] Recent X crashes

This does indeed more look like a less graceful handling of a previous Xorg crash (ksmserver tries to handle an xcb event and yells a warning what's probably "lost connection to server") - which should be recorded in your xorg log (otherwise you'll have to apply your new gdb skills to Xorg now ;-)

Re: [SOLVED] Recent X crashes

I'm not entirely sure what you mean, but I previously checked /var/log/Xorg.0.log, and couldn't see anything obvious. (Some of this file is in the original post.)

I tried to repeat gdb with Xorg, but couldn't get it working. Again, I find the pid with pgrep Xorg -l, then run sudo gdb -p <PID>. I start logging with set logging on, then continue, but after that I cannot switch TTYs any more. The keyboard doesn't seem to do anything. I have to Alt+SysRq+E to regain keyboard control (which obviously kills X).

I've also tried updating my BIOS, just in case.

Re: [SOLVED] Recent X crashes

Check the logs timestamp - it might be dated w/ more recent ones in ~/.local/share/xorg
The backtrace is usually at the end of the log (if Xorg segfaults)

I'd suggest to starx xterm and run startkde from the xterm.
If KDE crashes, you'll end up w/ X11 and the xterm, if X crashes yu wont ;-)

These logs are older. My understanding is that they are only used if you launch with a display manager? I'm starting X from the tty with startx.

Sounds good, but I'm not sure that I understand. Are you saying to start xterm directly from the tty?

$ xterm
xterm: Xt error: Can't open display:
xterm: DISPLAY is not set
$ DISPLAY=:0 xterm
xterm: Xt error: Can't open display: :0

(Also, I also tried disabling compositing, but it still crashed.)

Re: [SOLVED] Recent X crashes

No use literally

startx xterm

, that will start a xorg server for your xterm. And could you post a dmesg?

Re: [SOLVED] Recent X crashes

Thanks, I can try that. However, since then, I tried installing xfce instead, and can reproduce the X crash on that, so I guess that means the fault is with X not KDE Plasma. Here is dmesg from that crashed session (followed by my current KDE Plasma session, which I'm using to post this message).

=EDIT=
I'm assuming that the XFCE results mean that the xterm experiment is unnecessary. However, FWIW I tried this as well.

From the TTY, I ran startx xterm, but it just launched KDE as normal. I wasn't sure if that was due to ~/.xinitrc, which contained exec startkde, so I tried removing this file. However, startx xterm just failed with the following output.

=EDIT 2=
The other thing is that the crashes appear much more frequently when playing games, i.e. under higher (CPU? GPU?) load. I'm not sure if that is informative, because that's not the only time when it happens.

=EDIT 3=
And on a whim, I experimented with the hardware. About a week ago, I rejigged my USB peripherals. I plugged some devices in permanently, and changed hubs, to the one built into my monitor. I now removed everything except for my keyboard and monitor, which I plugged directly into the case, instead of the monitor hub. It's been super stable now for 30 minutes (while gaming), which is a record! I've previously had issues with USB devices. Also, about a year ago, my previous laptop also crashed constantly with a USB3 hub.

I'll confirm the stability with the minimal setup for a few more days, then try different permutations to isolate the problem. However, why exactly is there a problem with USB devices and Linux (?) or X (?)? Is there a way to use my USB devices however I'd like?

Re: [SOLVED] Recent X crashes

Well if your hub is constantly causing you issues it might be that the hub you are using is faulty. FWIW I never had issues with any of my USB ports and both my X and KDE have been stable

Re: [SOLVED] Recent X crashes

X isn't prone to crash even if you un/plug random usb devices

removed everything

is that also the XBOX controller?

Please provide a complete Xorg log.

Yes, I was surprised that even if the USB device/hub is faulty, it could cause X to crash. Let me troubleshoot a little more and ascertain exactly which device/hub it is that is causing the crashes.

Yes, the only things connected are my keyboard and mouse.

Do you mean a log of a crash? Or of a stable session?

Re: [SOLVED] Recent X crashes

I meant whether the controller was among the things you removed.
Both. Though I know which things I want to look for in the crashy scenario, comparism might highlight something in case the other things are not there ;-)

I get the feeling I'm missing something, but yes, I removed it, leaving only the keyboard and mouse connected.

Okay sounds good. Just give me a few days to confirm which the stable and unstable USB configurations are, then I'll post the logs up.

Thanks again for all your help, seth, and you too, V1del.

=EDIT=
It crashed again. Ugh.

Re: [SOLVED] Recent X crashes

The point would be that is indeed *was* there when things crashed.
