Constant problems with wireless connection on Intel 7265

I'm running on a Dell XPS 13 (9343) that originally had a broadcom network controller, but which I switched to an Intel 7265 some year ago. Ever since, I've had constant problems with the connection, even though I thought I would see improvement because I didn't need to use some proprietary driver from AUR.

I have mainly link problems, where it's hard to maintain a good connection to a link even though other devices around me are able to do it without any problems. The biggest problem is that the connection fully stops working after 5-10 minutes of the laptop booting up and I'm connected.  When I move the laptop closer to the router the connection starts working again (and now I'm talking barely 1 meter away).

I've tried switching off power saving for the controller, I've tried disabling 802.11g and I've also tried enabling antenna aggregation - to no avail.

I'm not really sure where to look now or what information you might need, so please guide me. I'm running kernel version 4.15.1-2-ARCH.

My /etc/modprobe.d/iwlwifi.conf (currently) looks like this, but as I said, I've tried switching around.

options iwlwifi swcrypto=1

Help would be appreciated.

Re: Constant problems with wireless connection on Intel 7265

Don't do that

Do you get any output in dmesg when the connection drops? In general can you post a dmesg? There are a few issues in recent threads, one thing you can try is checking if it might be an issue in a newer firmware by (re)moving the most current one that is loaded (again, check dmesg to see which one that is) in usr/lib/firmware/iwlwifi* so that the kernel loads an older firmware. Should that not help you can revert to a proper package state by reinstalling linux-firmware.

Sanity check time. What is the output of find /etc/systemd   ?

As the connection has yet to drop (see below), I can't show you a dmesg of that particular situation, but if my memory serves me right, I didn't notice anything new happening in dmesg the last time.

Anyway - I also ran

lspci -v

with the output of

02:00.0 Network controller: Intel Corporation Wireless 7265 (rev 61)
Subsystem: Intel Corporation Dual Band Wireless-AC 7265
Flags: bus master, fast devsel, latency 0, IRQ 49

	Capabilities: <access denied>
	Kernel driver in use: iwlwifi
	Kernel modules: iwlwifi, iw

Seeing the kernel module "iw" made me realize that I didn't uninstall broadcom-wl-dkms after I switched network cards. After doing this, and reverting all settings in to their original ones (802.11n enabled, swcrypto disabled, power save on), everything seems to be working fine. Could broadcom-wl-dkms have been a problem? I can't say for certain if everything works 100% before I've tried with other networks, but back home it seems to be running as good as ever. No disconnects where I usually had disconnects and the speed is doing fine.

If I keep having problems I will try to run an earlier version of iwlwifi as recommended.

Re: Constant problems with wireless connection on Intel 7265

Since the module isn't marked as being in use, it shouldn't have mattered, what will however, is

/etc/systemd/system/multi-user.target.wants/connman.service
...
/etc/systemd/system/multi-user.target.wants/netctl-auto@wlp2s0.service
/etc/systemd/system/multi-user.target.wants/netctl-ifplugd@enp0s20u2.service

Decide for one of the two, disable the other, don't run conflicting network management software at the same time.

Re: Constant problems with wireless connection on Intel 7265

The output I asked for appears sane, but I note that you are running several openvpn services.  Nothing wrong wit that, but I have had issues with VPN configurations that produce connectivity issues at the transport layer that  masquerade as network and data link layer issues.

Edit: V1del, I may have missed that.  Do those conflict?
Edit2:  Oh, I missed conman.  Yep.

Since the module isn't marked as being in use, it shouldn't have mattered, what will however, is

/etc/systemd/system/multi-user.target.wants/connman.service
...
/etc/systemd/system/multi-user.target.wants/netctl-auto@wlp2s0.service
/etc/systemd/system/multi-user.target.wants/netctl-ifplugd@enp0s20u2.service

Decide for one of the two, disable the other, don't run conflicting network management software at the same time.

I did run conman once, that's true. After I switched back to netctl I removed conman, which seems to be confirmed by that service not being loaded and the file being empty. It couldn't have been that?

The output I asked for appears sane, but I note that you are running several openvpn services.  Nothing wrong wit that, but I have had issues with VPN configurations that produce connectivity issues at the transport layer that  masquerade as network and data link layer issues.

Regarding the openvpn services, they aren't enabled and I haven't started them.

In that case not no, then you should continue to observe what is happening and should you see another drop, check if you get any other/additional info in your dmesg.

Thanks for the help. I'll get back here if the connection starts getting spooky again. Going out travelling for work in a bit, so I'll have time to check it against other networks and over a longer period of time.
